James Matthew Barrie
Dem folgten 1891 der romantisch- abenteuerlich verfasste Roman "The Little Minister“, 1895 "Sentimental Tommy“ und 1900 dessen Fortsetzung "Tommy and Grizel“.

During the next 10 years Barrie continued writing novels, such as Sentimental Tommy (1896) and Tommy and Grizel (1900), but gradually his interest turned toward the theater. His early plays were mostly unsuccessful, but the dramatization in 1897 of The Little Minister established him as a playwright. He was created a baronet in 1913 and was appointed to the Order of Merit in 1922. From 1930 until his death he was chancellor of the Univ. of Edinburgh. Barrie's life was dominated by his extraordinary mother. This relationship left him emotionally immature and probably precipitated the failure of his marriage. His lack of maturity is a discernible element in all Barrie's works. Yet even though he has been criticized for whimsy and sentimentality, Barrie reveals in his best works a profound understanding of human nature and an unexpected capacity for irony and mordant wit. Although he is famous for

Sir James Matthew Barrie
J.M. Barrie
Author and playwright. Born in Kirriemuir and educated at Dumfries Academy and the University of Edinburgh. Barrie is best known for the creation of Peter Pan, the boy who would not grow up, the inspiration for which came to him when a boy playing in the garden of Moat Brae, a house in Dumfries. Barrie's own character in many ways mirrored his creation; he was a small man and this lack of stature had always upset him, perhaps explaining why he related better to children than adults. His life was full of tragedy; the deaths of a brother, sister and his mother effected him deeply, his wife had an affair with a younger man and left him and two of his adopted children died tragically. All royalties from Peter Pan are now appropriately given to Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital in London.

BARRIE, Sir James Matthew
Born: May 9, 1860, in Kirriemuir, Angus, Scotland Died: June 19, 1937, in London, England Sir James Matthew Barrie was a Scottish dramatist and novelist. His works frequently portrays life as a romantic adventure. Accordingly, he is most noted for writing Peter Pan , the boy who refused to grow up. Barrie's father was a poor Scottish weaver, David Barrie. Because his father worked long hours, he was much closer to his mother, Margaret Ogilvy. Throughout Barrie's work, the recurring themes of motherhood and sentiment are felt to be a result of Barrie's relationship with his mother. Barrie was the youngest son in his family. When he was thirteen, his brother drowned. With the shock of her son's death, Margaret became an invalid and Barrie reputedly tried to replace his brother by lavishing attention on his mother. In 1896, he wrote Margaret Ogilvy for her. Sensitive about his height of about five feet, Barrie often felt more comfortable talking with children than adults. He was educated at a number of schools operated by his brother, A.O. Barrie. He attended the University of Edinburgh, and obtained a master's degree in 1882. Barrie worked as a journalist for the Nottingham Journal in 1883. His first literary work was published in the
