Journeys Over Land and Sea: Botany and Zoology
Direct observation of specimens brought to Europe from foreign lands replaced earlier depictions of the natural world with more accurate, less fanciful descriptions. Explorers in the Americas contributed new data about those continents.
[Gart der Gesundheit] (The garden of health)
Ulm?: Konrad Dinckmut?, 1487?.
Gart der Gesundheit is one of the first printed herbals to be published in a vernacular language instead of Latin. Herbals combined folklore and home remedies, information from classical sources, and religious symbolism into a popular mix of botanical and medical advice. Because text and woodcut images were often copied from earlier works, rather than drawn from nature, herbals became increasingly imprecise over time. While some illustrations remain identifiable, even charming to the modern eye, others are unrecognizable, frustrating both contemporaries and modern researchers.

University of Maryland, College Park, MD, USA INTRODUCTION The names of Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882) and Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) have long been joined with the modern concept of "evolution" and the theory of "natural selection." The story of the interrelationship between the two men over their professional careers is one of gentlemanly strain: Darwin , the country squire, living off inherited wealth and sound investments on a small estate working leisurely in the pursuit of evolution , and Wallace , the committed socialist, saved ultimately from abject poverty by Darwin and his friends who arranged a Crown pension, laboring seemingly forever in other's shadow. Their coming together was itself a random event that neither anticipated. Darwin, the procrastinator at least on this subject, was forced into action only when he saw his own ideas -formed over some twenty years-expressed in a letter written by Wallace in a span of a few days. So sudden did this happen, and so similar were many of Wallace's concepts that the gentleman in Darwin felt it was imperative that Wallace's letter be published. Only through actions of his friends, the geologist

What Is Entomology
Claudio Gay (French, 18001873), Charles Darwin (British, 1809-1882), Fritz Müller(German, 1822-1897), Henry Walter Bates (British, 1825-1892), and William
http://www.selby.org/research/canopy/what_is_entomology.htm
What is Entomology? August 2002 Entomology is the scientific study of insects, six-legged arthropods with three well-defined body parts: head, thorax, and abdomen. The practitioners of the science are called entomologists. A careful study of insects today requires an understanding beyond their taxonomic diversity that includes anatomy, physiology, phylogeny, development, behavior, and ecology. Entomology, then, is a specialized field within the biological sciences that details all aspects of the hexapods (six-legged animals), highlighting their evolutionary and ecological relationships. The field is separated into two major functional divisions: basic and applied entomology. Basic entomology examines unknown aspects of insects with no apparent application to practical problems. Basic entomology provides basic knowledge about insects. For example, it answers fundamental questions such as “How many beetle species inhabit an emergent tree in the Peruvian Upper Amazon?” or “What is the ecological role of a newly discovered mite species in the leaf litter of a Pennsylvania forest?” On the other hand, applied entomology tackles particular problems.
