    Henry Walter Bates
I Before leaving the subject of Para, where I resided, as already stated, in all eighteen months, it will be necessary to give a more detailed account of several matters connected with the customs of the people and the Natural History of the neighbourhood, which have hitherto been only briefly mentioned. I reserve an account of the trade and improved condition of Para in 1859 for the end of this narrative. During the first few weeks of our stay, many of those religious festivals took place, which occupied so large a share of the time and thoughts of the people. These were splendid affairs, wherein artistically-arranged processions through the streets, accompanied by thousands of people, military displays, the clatter of fireworks, and the clang of military music, were superadded to pompous religious services in the churches. To those who had witnessed similar ceremonies in the Southern countries of Europe, there would be nothing remarkable perhaps in these doings, except their taking place amidst the splendours of tropical nature; but to me they were full of novelty, and were besides interesting as exhibiting much that was peculiar in the manners of the people.
I will now add a few more notes which I have accumulated on the subject of the natural history, and then we shall have done, for the present, with Para and its neighbourhood.

Volney Waller (Faversham 1816 - 1870) describes the microscopic appearance of degenerating nerve fibers after an axon is cut, when the distal portions of the fiber degenerate. This made it possible to trace the course of fibers through the nervous system and demonstrated the importance of the nucleus in the regeneration of nerve fibers. This process was subsequently termed "Wallerian degeneration".
Extending Matteucci 's observations, Emil du Bois-Reymond observes that muscle and nerves of animals during their state of activity produce electric currents which can be measured with the aid of the usual apparatus of electrophysics, the galvanometer. He records a resting electrical current in relaxed muscle and shows that this current diminishes when the muscle contracts. DuBois-Reymond terms this negative fluctuation in the current an "action potential".

Sent as the Pope's ambassador to the Mongols, Carpini was the first European to describe the vast steppe country of Central Asia. More than 60 years old when he started out on Easter Day 1245, this Franciscan friar withstood the bitter cold of the Siberian winter as he travelled to the court of the Great Khan (Emperor) in Mongolia. Travelling about China he observed the use of paper money, coal, and the huge Chinese cities. 24 years later when he returned to Venice, few people believed his descriptions. But asked on his deathbed to recant, Marco answered "I have not told half of what I saw". 03 Leif Ericsson, tenth century A.D. Norseman.
