Kate played in New York as Juliet and Lady Macbeth, and in 1863 had a great success in London as Leah in Augustin Daly’s adaptation of Mosenthal’s Deborah. In 1866 she married George Crowe, but returned to the stage in 1868, playing later as Lady Macbeth with Henry Irving, and in 1875 in the title-part of Tennyson’s Queen Mary. When her mother opened the Sadiler’s Wells theatre in 1879 Miss Bateman appeared as Helen Macgregor in Rob Roy, and in 1881 as Margaret Field in Henry Arthur Jones’ His Wife. Her daughter, Sidney Crowe (b. 1871), also became an actress. Virginia Bateman (b. 1854), a younger sister of Kate, born in Cincinnati, Ohio, went on the stage as a child, and first appeared in London in the title-part of her mother’s play, Fanc/ietle, in 1871. She created a number of important parts during several seasons at the Lyceum and elsewhere. She married Edward Cotnpton the actor. Another sister was Isabel (b. 1854), well known on the London stage. THE NATURAL HISTORY MAN
Henry Walter Bates
Born in 1825, at thirteen he was apprenticed to a hosier, where his duties were to open and sweep out the warehouse. In his spare time, though, he studied in the local Mechanics Institute or, on holidays, searched for insects in Charnwood Forest. In 1843 he had a short paper, 'On Coleopterous Insects frequenting Damp Places', published in the first issue of the Zoologist magazine.
Bitten by the bugs
Two years later he found a job as a clerk, but it didn't suit him. Meanwhile he had become friends with another keen entomologist, Alfred Russel Wallace, an English teacher. Inspired by the journal of Darwin's voyage around the world in HMS Beagle and by a book on an Amazon expedition by one William H. Edwards, they decided to visit the Amazon themselves, collecting facts and specimens to contribute to the debate on the origin of species, and selling duplicates to defray their expenses.
Up the river
For the next eleven years Bates explored and collected around the Amazon and its tributaries, penetrating 1,400 miles upstream. (In March 1850 he and Wallace decided to split up, and the latter returned to England in 1852 before moving on to the Malay Archipelago in 1853.)
He described his travels in The Naturalist on the Amazons

Phil Ackery H.W. Bates: An Extraordinary Butterfly Collector
The development of our butterfly collection owes so much to now-forgotten nineteenth-century pioneers. Henry Walter Bates (1825–1892) filled this role admirably. Over eleven years, between 1848 and 1859, he collected 14,000 different sorts of insect along the Amazon in South America, and estimated that 8,000 of these species were previously unknown. What were the practicalities and difficulties of collecting insects 150 years ago? Find out more with Museum Butterfly Collections Manager Phil Ackery. Butterflies in Perú are not as well-known as those in neighbouring countries, and every collection and identification expedition results in new species being registered. Current investigations show that Peru has been graced with more than 20% of the butterfly fauna in the world. In his classic 1863 travel book The Naturalist on the River Amazon , the great Victorian naturalist Henry Walter Bates (1825–1892) predicted that "... the study of butterflies -creatures chosen to symbolise the ethereal and the frivolous- instead of being looked down on, will someday be considered one of the most important branches of the natural sciences." With the passing of years, this belief has become a concrete certainty as butterflies are today the best-known group of terrestrial invertebrates. Bates lived eleven years of his life (1848 to 1859) in the Brazilian Amazon investigating the natural history of this vast region crossed by the Amazon River and its tributaries. In those days, little was known of the plants and animals that lived in the central part of South America. As he slowly travelled upriver from Pará at the mouth of the Amazon towards the Brazil-Peru border, Bates made one of his transcendental discoveries: the diversity of butterfly species increased significantly as he travelled westward and upstream. Based on his observations, he was confident of finding the greatest diversity at the foot of the Andes and made plans to continue westward to the Peruvian towns of Pebas and Moyobamba with the objective of completing "... the examination of the Natural History of the Amazon Basin..."
