Rex Beach, 1877-1949 Rex Ellingwood Beach was born in Michigan in 1877, the son of a farmer. At the age of seven his family moved to Florida and, after attending public schools in Tampa, Rex Beach enrolled in the Preparatory Department at Rollins College. In 1894, he progressed to the Collegiate Department; however, he never graduated. Instead, he joined his brothers' law firm in Chicago and studied at the Chicago College of Law. In 1897, Beach answered the call of the gold rush, and departed for Alaska. For five years he traveled backwards and forwards between Alaska and Chicago, even enrolling in Kent College of Law; however, he ultimately decided against pursuing a legal career. While searching for work, Beach wrote a short story entitled "The Mule Driver and the Garrulous Mute." McClure's Magazine paid him $50 for it. Even after he found employment selling firebrick, lime and cement, Beach continued to write short stories. S. S. McClure eventually suggested that Beach should try to write novel. In 1904, a collection of Beach's short stories was published under the title Pardners , but it was not until 1906 that his first full-length novel appeared— The Spoilers Rex Beach married Edith Greta Crater a year later and spent his honeymoon writing The Barrier . A prolific writer, Beach nevertheless found time to become involved in the newly created Authors League in 1912. He had the foresight to retain the movie rights to his books, which continued to provide him with income even after he reduced the number of books he wrote in favor of farming in Sebring, Florida. Altogether, fourteen of his novels and sixteen of his original scenarios were made into motion pictures. In 1948, he sold the film rights to his last novel

Babylonian Legend of Ishtar
The heading of "The House of Arabu" consists of seven lines from this ancient text, also known as "Descent of Ishtar to the Nether World." The quotation seems to be from Morals in Ancient Babylon , by Joseph McCabe (Little Blue Book #1076), slightly modified (in the quotation, a second clause in each of the first two lines has been dropped; the first part of these lines, and the rest of the quotation, is identical to the McCabe text). One Who Walked Alone , p. 204: [REH makes the suggestion that Shakespeare's plays might have been written by Bacon (an idea first put forth in the mid-19th century; see "Shakespeare")] "'Can't you just see those old Elizabethans sitting around talking, trying to decide whether revenge should be done by the next of kin or by the State?
