Max Beerbohm, the foremost caricaturist of his day, was hailed by The Times in 1913 as “the greatest of English comic artists,” by Bernard Berenson as “the English Goya,” and by Edmund Wilson as “the greatest . . . portrayer of personalitiesin the history of art.” This delightful book is an anthology of Beerbohm’s best images, accompanied by historical and analytical commentary by John Hall that is enriched by liberal quotation from Beerbohm’s own witty essays, criticism, letters, and fiction. The 213 caricatures reproduced here are arranged in chapters by category: writers, including Wilde, Kipling, James, Conrad, Yeats, Twain, Wells, Hardy, Strachey, Forster, and Pound; theater people, including Ibsen, Shaw, and Barrie; artists, including Whistler, Sargent, and Fry; politicians, including Disraeli, Theodore Roosevelt, Wilson, and Churchill; royalty, especially King Edward VII (Beerbohm’s favorite subject), but also Queen Victoria, George V, and Edward VIII; and miscellaneous contemporaries, including Caruso, Sousa, and financier Albert De Rothschild. Also reproduced are generous selections from Beerbohm’s two books of caricatures dealing with the past: Dante, Burns, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Tennyson, and Browning from The Poet’s Corner;

    Beerbohm, Sir Max 1872-1956, English essayist, caricaturist, and parodist. He contributed to the famous Yellow Book while still an undergraduate at Oxford. In 1898 he succeeded G. B. Shaw as drama critic for the Saturday Review. A charming, witty, and elegant man, Beerbohm was a brilliant parodist and the master of a polished prose style. His works include A Christmas Garland (1912), a collection of parodies on such authors as Joseph Conrad and Thomas Hardy; Zuleika Dobson (1911), an amusing satire on Oxford; Seven Men (1919), stories; and And Even Now (1920) and Mainly on the Air (1947), essays. Beerbohm was accomplished at drawing, and he published several volumes of excellent caricatures, including The Poet's Corner (1904) and Rossetti and His Circle (1922). He was knighted in 1939 on his return from Italy, where he had lived from 1910. See collections ed. by S. C. Roberts (1962) and Lord David Cecil (1971); biography by Lord David Cecil (1964); studies by John Felstiner (1972), Bohun Lynch (1974), and Lawrence Danson (1989).

    THE PRIVATE COLLECTION OF LUCY DYVENOR, GRANDDAUGHTER OF SIR WILLIAM ROTHENSTEIN TO BE SOLD AT SOTHEBY’S, OLYMPIA
    Portrait of Augustus John by Sir William Rothenstein RA, coloured chalk, 1898
    (Est:£5,000-£7,000)
    AN IMPRESSIVE collection of Modern British Paintings belonging to Lucy Dyvenor, granddaughter of British artist and influential teacher Sir William Rothenstein (1872-1945), features several important works of art that have never been sold at auction before and will fall under the hammer at Sotheby’s, Olympia on Wednesday, February 26, 2003. The collection is expected to realise in excess of £150,000 and includes works by William Rothenstein, Max Beerbohm, Charles Conder and Augustus John. Estimates will range from £400-£15,000. Freya Mitton, Modern British Picture specialist at Sotheby’s, Olympia commented. “The works on offer chronicle the significant developments in British art during the period 1819 to 1945 and later, the importance of the Slade from its very foundation, of influences from France and of the Royal College of Art under Sir William Rothenstein in the 1920s.” Sir William Rothenstein (1872-1945) was the son of a German-born Bradford wool-merchant. At the age of 16 he moved to London and enrolled at the Slade School of Art. After working under Alphonse Legros, he moved to Paris in 1889 as an apparently unremarkable 17-year old English art student, and enrolled in the Académie Julien. Within a short time Rothenstein had established a circle of friends and acquaintances that reads like a Who’s Who of the artists and writers of the day. Four years later he was to repeat the exercise in Oxford and London.

Als prominente Persönlichkeit der Londoner Gesellschaft kannte Beerbohm alle und karikierte jeden, wobei er vor allem die Exzentrizitäten der Persönlichkeiten des gesellschaftlichen, politischen und literarischen Lebens Großbritanniens in einer umfangreichen Serie von witzigen Zeichnungen porträtierte. 1939 wurde er zum Ritter geschlagen. Abgesehen von dem Roman "Zuleika Dobson" (1911), einer Satire auf das Leben an der Universität Oxford , bestehen Beerbohms Bücher in erster Linie aus Zusammenstellungen seiner in Zeitschriften und Zeitungen veröffentlichten Beiträge. Als Nachfolger von George Bernard Shaw war er von 1898 bis 1912 Theaterkritiker bei der Saturday Review . Zu seinen bekanntesten Arbeiten gehören die Parabel "The Happy Hypocrite" "Der zärtliche Betrüger" ) und "And Even Now" (1920). Parodien von zeitgenössischen Schriftstellern enthält der Band
