Beethoven Biography Ludwig Van Beethoven (Bonn, 1782 - Vienna, 1827) Beethoven, Ludwig van (1770-1827) , German composer, generally considered one of the greatest composers in the Western tradition. Born in Bonn, Beethoven was reared in stimulating, although unhappy, surroundings. His early signs of musical talent were subjected to the capricious discipline of his father, a singer in the court chapel. In 1789, because of his father's alcoholism, the young Beethoven became a court musician in order to support his family. His early compositions under the tutelage of German composer Christian Gottlob Neefe—particularly the funeral cantata on the death of Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II in 1790—signaled an important talent, and it was planned that Beethoven study in Vienna, Austria, with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Although Mozart's death in 1791 prevented this, Beethoven went to Vienna in 1792 and became a pupil of Austrian composer Joseph Haydn. In Vienna, Beethoven dazzled the aristocracy with his piano improvisations. Meanwhile, he entered into increasingly favorable arrangements with Viennese music publishers. In composition he steered a middle course between the stylistic extravagance of German composer Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and what the public had perceived as the overrefinement of Mozart. The broadening market for published music enabled Beethoven to succeed as a freelance composer, a path that Mozart, a decade earlier, had found full of frustration. In the first decade of the 19th century Beethoven renounced the sectional, loosely constructed style of works such as the popular Septet op. 20, for strings and winds, and turned to a fresh expansion of the musical language bequeathed by Haydn and Mozart. Despite his exaggerated claim that “he had never learned anything from Haydn”—he had gone so far as to seek additional instruction from German composer Johann Georg Albrechtsberger — Beethoven soon revealed his complete assimilation of the Viennese classical style in every major instrumental genre: symphony, concerto, string quartet, and sonata. The majority of the works for which he is most readily remembered today were composed during the decade bounded by the Symphony no. 3 (Eroica, begun 1803; first performed, 1805) and the Symphony no. 8 (1812), a period known as his heroic decade.

Ludwig van Beethoven Nos últimos anos de sua vida o compositor Robert Schumann, acometido de uma depressão nervosa, foi aconselhado pelo seu médico a fazer passeios a pé. Ele saía a caminhar e fazia diariamente o mesmo percurso. Ia até uma estátua de Ludwig van Beethoven A última sinfonia Guardamos dele a imagem de um homem triste, angustiado, solitário, mas essa imagem não é inteiramente verdadeira. É evidente que ele era um homem contraditório, temperamental tirânico e cortês. No entanto, deixou-nos grandes obras sinfônicas que são a culminância da música. Quando foi executada a sua Primeira Sinfonia, em 1800, Beethoven ainda não havia completado 30 anos de idade. Cheio de ambições, e com certa dose de vaidade, tentava conquistar os meios musicais de Viena como virtuose do piano. Sentia em si mesmo um enorme poder, mas ainda se adaptava às convenções sociais, compondo alegres músicas de câmara e andando pelas ruas impecavelmente vestido. Atraía assim admiradores das altas rodas. A música era para Beethoven alguma coisa como o mar. Dava-lhe uma impressão esmagadora, enchia-o de admiração, inspirava-lhe entusiasmo e também medo, um medo terrível do infinito. Mas ele se atirava, de cabeça, nas ondas ameaçadoras. As suas sinfonias estão numa categoria à parte num valor tão alto como as peças de Shakespeare. Como acontecia com Shakespeare, o campo de Beethoven era amplo. Então, que é que coloca essas sinfonias em lugar de destaque? Contêm árias bonitas, melodias notáveis? Sim, todavia não é esse o motivo. Beethoven tirou a música de um pedestal de beleza formal, onde Mozart e Haydn (cuja influência sobre Beethoven foi marcante) a tinham deixado, e sacudiu-a e revolveu-a até produzir o efeito que ele esperava que produzisse
