Introduction
Read the best books first, or you may not have a chance to read them at all.
Henry David Thoreau Thoreau's advice seems particularly applicable to today's world where the proliferation of all forms of literary material creates a dilemma for the person attempting to choose something to read. With this advice in mind, the Network Services Section has produced a series of three minibibliographies listing the best of American fiction. This first minibibliography of the series lists fiction of America's early period, particularly of the mid-to-late- nineteenth century when the American novel came of age. American writers had finally freed themselves from imitating the themes and characterizations of the English and established their own literary form with two great masterpieces: Herman Melville's Moby Dick and Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. From these novels, American literature moved on to the social and political satire of Mark Twain in Huckleberry Finn and the new realism of William Dean Howells, Henry James, Stephen Crane, and Frank Norris. Books chosen for this minibibliography are based upon the recommendations offered in Good Reading, edited by J. Sherwood Weber; The Reader's Advisor, 12th edition, volume 1; "Darien's First 'Classics' Collection," from Library Journal, November 15, 1981; and American Novel, Brown to James, edited by Frank N. Magill.

INTRODUCTION
Looking Backward by Edward Bellamy is a novel that takes the reader from the end of the 19th century into an idealistic vision of the 21st century. In many ways Looking Backward is a 19th century romantic novel; yet, on another level the novel is a complex investigation of the possibilities of humanity as the conversations unfold between Julian West, the narrator and time traveler, and Dr. leetee, his 21st century guide and mentor. Through these often Socratic conversations, Bellamy provides the reader with insight into the social problems and ills of the mid-to-late 19th century as well as with a vision of a utopian possibility for the millennium. This rich, multi-faceted novel can be used successfully in a variety of high school courses. Younger students are fascinated with the time travel aspect as well as the predictions about Julian West's future, which is the contemporary reader's present. Older students are able to explore the frame structure and intricacies of Bellamy's themes.

Looking Backward:

Edward Bellamy (1850-1898) Author's Preface
Historical Section Shawmut College, Boston,
December 26, 2000 L The object of this volume is to assist persons who, while desiring to gain a more definite idea of the social contrasts between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, are daunted by the formal aspect of the histories which treat the subject. Warned by a teacher's experience that learning is accounted a weariness to the flesh, the author has sought to alleviate the instructive quality of the book by casting it in the form of a romantic narrative, which he would be glad to fancy not wholly devoid of interest on its own account. That this volume may be so fortunate as to find readers whose interest in the subject shall incline them to overlook the deficiencies of the treatment is the hope in which the author steps aside and leaves Mr. Julian West to speak for himself. I I first saw the light in the city of Boston in the year 1857. "What!" you say, "eighteen fifty-seven? That is an odd slip. He means nineteen fifty-seven, of course." I beg pardon, but there is no mistake. It was about four in the afternoon of December the 26th, one day after Christmas, in the year 1857, not 1957, that I first breathed the east wind of Boston, which, I assure the reader, was at that remote period marked by the same penetrating quality characterizing it in the present year of grace, 2000.

hen, in the course of our tour of inspection, we came to the library, we succumbed to the temptation of the luxurious leather chairs with which it was furnished, and sat down in one of the book-lined alcoves to rest and chat awhile. [I cannot sufficiently celebrate the glorious liberty that reigns in the public libraries of the twentieth century as compared with the intolerable management of those of the nineteenth century, in which the books were jealously railed away from the people, and obtainable only at an expenditure of time and red tape calculated to discourage any ordinary taste for literature.] "Edith tells me that you have been in the library all the morning," said Mrs. Leete. "Do you know, it seems to me, Mr. West, that you are the most enviable of mortals." "I should like to know just why," I replied.

[Under Construction] The following table lists the selections by the following:
"Savants Select Most Influential Volumes," English Journal 25 (1936). [25 selections each by Edward Weeks, editor of the Atlantic Monthly Press ; Charles A. Beard, historian; John Dewey, philosopher]
Malcolm Cowley and Bernard Smith, Books That Changed Our Minds (1939). [12 selections]
Horace Shipp, Books That Moved the World (1945). [10 selections]
Robert B. Downs, Books That Changed the World (1956) [16 selections] Note: Some of these lists were compiled with restrictions. Dewey, Weeks, and Beard were asked to "select the twenty-five most influential books published in the last fifty years." This means between 1874 and 1936. Downs, on the other hand, writes, "For practical reasons, it was arbitrarily decided to restrict the discussion to books in science and the social sciences, omitting such vastly important fields as religion, philosophy, and literature." Utopiakirjojen klassikko vuodelta 1888: Maailman ongelmat ratkaistu vuonna 2000
E dward Bellamyn kirja nimeltä Vuonna 2000 tarjoaa mielenkiintoisen näkökulman siihen, millainen maailmamme on nyt vuosituhannen vaihtuessa. Bellamyn ennustekirja on nimittäin kirjoitettu vuonna 1888. Päin vastoin kuin George Orwellin tai Aldous Huxleyn Uljas uusi maailma Bellamyn teos piirtää kuvan maapallosta, jonka ongelmat on ratkaistu. Bellamyn profetia nousi ilmestyessään tärkeäksi opukseksi: valtavan suosion saanut teos on Yhdysvaltain toiseksi myydyin kirja 1800-luvulla. - He uskoivat, että suuret yhtiöt valmistautuivat panemaan heidät ennennäkemättömän ikeeseen; ihmiset eivät palvelisi enää toisiaan vaan sieluttomia koneita, joiden ainoana motiivina on kyltymätön ahneus.
