The History of Psychology The Era of Science and the Twentieth Century Modern American Psychology Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) Essays (Joan Johnson Lewis) was god-father to William James the founder of American psychology. Emerson established a uniquely American version of the Platonic doctrine of personal psychology. A person’s goal should be to develop character and, thereby, overcome the foils of the material world. His “transcendentalism” led to James’ and other American thinkers’ struggle to accommodate the necessary reliance on practical experience with the more ethereal qualities of consciousness and morality. Henry David Thoreau (Richard Lenat’s Thoreau Reader) furthered the idea of incorporating practicality with serious thought. Like Rousseau, Thoreau actively distrusted the influence of society on the development of character and, thus he added to the spirit of skepticism for authority and independent action into American thought. William James (1842-1910)- Included here are excerpts from Radical Empiricism Varieties of Religious Experience , and James correspondence.

the brightness and warmth of the New England sunshine as it creeps among the shadows of humble circumstances. A later novel, The Story of Thyrza (1909), is a work of genuine creative power.
Romance and Idealistic Fiction
There are other well-known writers of fiction who belong to New England, at least by birth, whose work does not permit of such definite classification as that of the group just considered; it is not concerned with the local type. Here belongs the name of Jane G. Austin (1831-1894) , whose historical novels, Standish of Standish Betty Alden (1891), etc., deal with Old Colony times. Harriet Prescott Spofford (1835-1921) is the author of numerous romantic tales beginning with Sir Rohan's Ghost (1859). Her more mature novels include Priscilla's Love Story The Maid He Married (1899), and The Great Procession Ellen Olney Kirk (born in Connecticut, 1842) published her first novel, Love in Idleness , in 1877. She has written a score of popular stories, including Through Winding Ways The Story of Margaret Kent Sons and Daughters The Apology of Ayliffe (1904), and

drug. ‘ Not only does it relieve the spasm, but it lessens the amount of secretion—often dangerously excessive—which is often associated with it. The relief of symptoms in whoopingcough is sharply to be distinguished from any influence on the course of the disease, since the drug does not abbreviate its duration by a single day. In treating an actual and present attack of asthma, it is advisable to give the standardized tincture of belladonna—unless expense is no consideration, in which case atropine may itself be used—in doses of twenty minims every quarter of an hour as long as no evil effects appear. Relief is thereby constantly obtained. Smaller doses of the drug should be given three times a day between the attacks. The nocturnal enuresis or urinary incontinence of children and of adults is frequently relieved by this drug. The excellent toleration of atropine displayed by children must be remembered, and if its use is “pushed” a cure may almost always be expected. Toxicology.—The symptoms of poisoning by belladonna or atropine are dealt with above. The essential point here to be added is that death takes place from combined cardiac and respiratory failure. This fact is, of course, the key to treatment. This consists in the use of emetics or the stomach-pump, with lime-water, which decomposes the alkaloid. These measures are, however, usually rendered nugatory by the very rapid absorption of the alkaloid. Death is to be averted by such measures as will keep the heart and lungs in action until the drug has been excreted by the kidneys. Inject stimulants subcutaneously; give coffee—hot and strong—by the mouth and rectum, or use large doses of caffeine citrate; and employ artificial respiration. Do not employ ‘such physiological antagonists as pilocarpine or morphine, for the lethal actions of all these drugs exhibit not mutual antagonism but coincidence.

THE These qualities were equal to the suffering and the death which came to him in the midst of his work, and cut him off from writing that one more book with which every author hopes to round his career. He suffered greatly, but he bore his suffering greatly; and as for his death, it is told that when, toward the last, those who loved him were loath to leave him at night alone, as he preferred to be left, he asked, "What can happen to me? I can only die." I am glad that he lived to die at home in Chicopee,in the village environment by which he interpreted the heart of the American nation, and knew how to move it more than any other American author who has lived. The theory of those who think differently is that he simply moved the popular fancy; and this may suffice to explain the state of some people, but it will not account for the love and honor in which his name is passionately held by the vast average, East and West. His fame is safe with them, and his faith is an animating force concerning whose effect at this time or some other time it would not be wise to prophesy. Whether his ethics will keep his aesthetics in remembrance I do not know; but I am sure that one cannot acquaint one's self with his merely artistic work, and not be sensible that in Edward Bellamy we were rich in a romantic imagination surpassed only by that of Hawthorne.

onnen paratiisi". Utopiakirjoille tyypilliseen tapaan Bellamyn teos toimii parhaiten kirjoitusajankohdan
siirtymisen valtiososialismiin. Vaikka valtiososialismia on totalitaarisessa muodossaan sittemmin
mukaan "kaikki parhaansa yrittävät ovat samanarvoisia, saavuttivatpa he sitten paljon tai vähän", on ajaton.
