Anywhere but here: A historic arsenal may share its land with a housing development
Story by Abby Fox / Aug. 15, 2001
The commandant's house, part of the Benicia Arsenal
(U.S. Benicia Arsenal Preservation Task Force) Benicia Arsenal, the first federal military installation on the West Coast, may share its seven acres with a single-family-home subdivision 30 miles northeast of San Francisco.
The Benicia Arsenal supplied the United States in every military conflict from the Civil War to the Korean War. Grant served there as a lieutenant, and Gen. Sherman drew the arsenal’s boundaries in 1849. The arsenal was also the childhood home of poet Stephen Vincent Benet (1898-1943), who wrote the Civil War narrative poem "John Brown’s Body." Its first brick structures were built in 1859, at a time when the town was a Gold Rush gateway and a Pony Express stop.
The three-month-old task force will argue that the development plan does not conform to a 1993 state conservation plan, which ambiguously permits residential growth in the "lower arsenal" area, says Jane Lauder, one of the task force’s 35 members. The organization also plans to sue the city for not procuring what she calls a "proper environmental review of the project."

RETURN 1917 "The College will reopen Sept. ."
`Catalogue'. I was just aiming at the jagged hole
Torn in the yellow sandbags of their trench,
When something threw me sideways with a wrench,
And the skies seemed to shrivel like a scroll
And disappear . . . and propped against the bole
Of a big elm I lay, and watched the clouds
Float through the blue, deep sky in speckless crowds,
And I was clean again, and young, and whole. Lord, what a dream that was! And what a doze
Waiting for Bill to come along to class!
I've cut it now and he Oh, hello, Fred! Why, what's the matter? here don't be an ass, Sit down and tell me! What do you suppose? I dreamed I . . . am I . . . wounded? "You are dead." By: Stephen Vincent Benet (1898-1943)

American poet, novelist, and writer of short stories, best-known for JOHN BROWN'S BODY, a long epic poem on the Civil War, which Benét wrote in France. Benét's work has appealed both to mass audiences and intellectuals alike. "American muse, whose strong and diverse heart
So many men have tried to understand
But only made it smaller with their art Because you are as various as your land, As mountainous - deep, as flowered with blue rivers, Thirsty with deserts, buried under snows, As native as the shape of Navajo quivers And native, too, as the sea-voyaged rose."
(from John Brown's Body) Stephen Vincent Benét was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, into an army family. His father, Colonel J. Walker Benét, served as a commanding officer of ordinance posts in California and Georgia. Frances Neill (Rose) Benét, Stephen's mother, was a descendant of an old Kentucky military family. Because his father was an avid reader, Benét grew up in surroundings in which reading literature was valued and enjoyed. At the age of about ten, Benét was sent to the Hitchcock Military Academy. He did not like the brutality of the school and later wrote about it in his poem about Shelley at Eton:
