There can be no knowledge without emotion. We may be aware of a truth, yet until we have felt its force, it is not ours. To the cognition of the brain must be added the experience of the soul. To the artist is sometimes granted a sudden, transient insight which serves in this matter for experience. A flash, and where previously the brain held a dead fact, the soul grasps a living truth! At moments we are all artists. It is easier to go down a hill than up, but the view is from the top. The price of justice is eternal publicity.

The Five Towns, made famous in the stories of Arnold Bennett (18671931), are thetowns of, Tunstall, Stoke, Hanley Burslem and Longton in the Staffordshire
http://www1.freewebs.com/stoke-on-trent/abennett.htm
Arnold Bennett He married Marie Marguerite Soulie, a Frenchwoman in 1907 and in 1912 Arnold Bennett returned to England to settle permanently with his wife Marguerite, who he later separated from. Two books of short stories called The Grim Smile of the Five Towns (1907) and The Matador of the Five Towns (1912) are set in the same area of the Potteries. He had a lifelong devotion for the theatre and wrote several successful plays, notably Milestones (1912, with E. Knoblock. During World War One, he became a public servant, serving on the War Memorials and Wounded Allies Relief Committee and as head of propaganda in France. Whilst in France he wrote on conditions at the front, after the war he continued to write and composed, These Twain, 1916, The Roll Call, 1918. In 1922 began to live with Dorothy Cheston, who was regarded as his second wife and changed her name to Bennett, they had a daughter who they named Virginia Mary Bennett. He shows a concern for obscure and ordinary lives which also reveals itself in the best novel of his later years, Riceyman Steps (1923), the story of a tight-fisted second-hand bookseller, set in drab Clerkenwell. In 1926 at the suggestion of his friend, he began a significant weekly article on books for the Evening Standard, which continued until, after a trip to France, he returned to London very ill with typhoid fever and died. My own thoughts are that one of Bennett's great works was The Card (1911), again set in the Potteries, it's a good piece of writing, this novel was transformed into a film. Another piece of wonderful writing is Mr Prohack (1922).

THE DOG
T HIS I stoop to utter the obvious Yes. He may casually inform you that, if he is not in London himself, the explanation is that he has reasons for preferring Bursley. He is the social equal of all his clients. He belongs to the dog's club. He knows, and everybody knows, that he is a first-class tailor with a first-class connection, and no dog would dare to condescend to him. He is a great creative artist; the dogs who wear his clothes may be said to interpret his creations. Now, Ellis was a great interpretative artist, and the tailor recognised the fact. When the tailor met Ellis on Duck Bank greatly wearing a new suit, the scene was impressive. It was as though Elgar had stopped to hear Paderewski play "Pomp and Circumstance" on the piano.
