arnold bennett British Novelist Arnold Bennett was born near Hamley, Staffordshire. Having studied at a London University, he became a Solicitors Clerk, but the literary world had always attracted him and he quickly transferred to journalism where he became the editor of the journal "Woman". In 1900, he went to live in Paris for eight years where he was engaged exclusively in writing, journalistic and creative. His claims to recognition as a novelist rest mainly on such novels as the Clayhange Family, Riceyman Steps, and his more humorous style is found in novels such as the Card, The Grand Babylon Hotel and the play The Great Adventure. Attention to detail is Bennetts distinguishing trait. BennettÂ’s play Milestone has been much performed. Bennett lived for a time at no 75 Cadogan Square, SW3 , a few minutes walk from the London Outpost
