Thomas Hart Benton
Thomas Hart Benton was born in Hillsborough, North Carolina, and moved to Tennessee in 1809. He studied law and was later elected to the state senate. During the War of 1812 , Benton raised a contingent of volunteers and served on Andrew Jackson 's staff. Later, Benton got into a bloody fight with Jackson, prompting the former to leave Tennessee. Benton moved to Missouri and became a newspaper editor, was active in public affairs and in 1821 was elected as the state’s first Senator. He made his mark by representing popular western causes—liberal land policy, road construction and opening new territories to settlement. Benton became very conservative on monetary matters. He opposed the Second Bank of the United States and earned the nickname “Old Bullion” for his advocacy of “ hard money ” over “ soft money .” Benton was a foe of land speculators, preferring that purchasers of western lands be actual settlers. He strove to gain Congressional support for his programs of preemption and graduation. Benton was in general a supporter of Andrew Jackson (the two were reconciled) and an opponent of John C. Calhoun

Thomas Hart Benton was the U.S. Congress's chief advocate of western settlement for more than thirty years, beginning in 1821. He was well known for his grandiloquent oratory and explosive temper, although he surprised people with conciliatory stands regarding slavery and territorial disputes. Benton favored gaining territory through occupation rather than military conflict. His ideas presaged the Homestead Act of 1862 , which granted land to settlers after they had lived on it and improved it for a period of five years. Benton did all in his power to assist homesteaders, advocating cheap land, the development of transportation routes such as the Santa Fe and Oregon trails, and, later, stagecoach and railroad service. He strongly encouraged the development of overland transportation, both to connect isolated settlers with friends and family and to provide the "skeleton of the future railroad." As chairman of the Committee on Indian Affairs, Benton facilitated the removal of Native American tribes to clear the way for white settlement. Following in his footsteps, Benton's son-in-law, (also the first Republican presidential candidate, in 1856) extensively explored the western territories and played a major role in the conquest of California during the Mexican War.

Author: Mary Trotter Kion
Published on: January 4, 2002 December 31, 1818, from Back East Settlements to Great American Plains. Dear G. A., How's everything out there on the prairie? Till now I guess you've mostly been visited by Indians, fur trappers, and explorers. But that will change in a few years. In the meantime I though I'd catch you up on the news back here in the east, all of which will have an effect on you later. There have been quite a few births so I'll tell you about them this time. A fellow was born in 1800 who you'll hear a lot more about. His folks, Mr. and Mrs. Owen Brown, named him John. He's going to cause a stir out your way, in a place that'll be called Kansas, so keep a look out for him. Also that year William McGuffey was born. He'll stir things up in a different way when he publishes some schoolbooks. Strange as it seems, about 122 million of those little volumes will be sold. One interesting man you are sure to meet was born in 1804. He goes by the name of Jim Bridger. He'll become a mountain man. Another fellow, born in 1800, who is really going to get his digs in over in your territory is called John Deere. And speaking of mountain men, I guess you'll meet Kit Carson, too. He was born in Kentucky in 1809.

Benton is located in Western Kentucky, a portion of the area known as the Purchase. The city was founded in 1842, named the County Seat of Marshall County in that year, and incorporated as a city in 1845. Benton was named for Missouri Senator Thomas Hart Benton (1782-1858). In 1995, Benton celebrated it's Sesquicentennial, and the Memorial Plaza in downtown Benton was the site of a ceremony dedicating plaques to the founders, Mr.'s. Bearden and Clayton, and Senator Benton. Recreation: Benton residents are fortunate in that they live near one of the greatest outdoor recreation areas in the United States. Just to the east of town, forming the eastern border of Marshall County is Kentucky Lake, one of the largest man-made lakes on the planet. Slightly further east is Lake Barkley, and in the middle is the Land Between the Lakes, a 170,000-acre reserve created in the early 1960's and allowed to return to its natural state. Hunting, fishing, boating...if you can do it outdoors and on the water, this is the place for you. The recreation area offers 300 miles of beaches and 200 miles of hiking and biking trails.
