Thomas Hart Benton (1782-1858)
He served in the War of 1812 as a colonel under General Andrew Jackson, an early friend of his. They soon after had a falling out, facing off with guns and daggers in a barroom brawl in which Jackson was seriously wounded. Benton moved to St. Louis in 1815, became a newspaper editor, and upon Missouri's statehood in 1820 he was elected as one of its first U.S. Senators, serving for 30 years. He came to be recognized as a great orator and Senate leader . Benton's anti-slavery views cost him his Senate seat in 1850. Walter Q. Gresham (1832-1895)
He was admitted to the Indiana bar in 1854 and elected to the State Legislature in 1860. As the Civil War broke out, Gresham recruited his own military company, and rose in rank to Brigadier General. A gunshot wound in battle in Georgia ended his military career. He returned to practice law in Indiana, and ran unsuccessfully for both the U.S. House and Senate. He was appointed Postmaster General in 1883 by President Arthur. Gresham later served as Secretary of the Treasury, U.S. Circuit Judge, and Secretary of State.

A New generation of leaders Emerge from the War of 1812 America’s second war with Britain (1812-1815) saw the rise of a new and influential citizenry in an ever-expanding society. Prominent among them were war veterans. ANDREW JACKSON (1767-1845) Waxhaw Settlement, S.C. Seventh President of the U.S. Andrew Jackson served two terms as President (1828-1837). He championed equality of opportunity for Americans from all walks of life, majority rule, limited government and fiscal responsibility. He was the first and last President to pay off the national debt. As a general in the Tennessee militia and later the regular U.S. Army, he led troops to victory over the Creek Indians at Horseshoe Bend, Ala., and the British at New Orleans. Three years after the war, he defeated the Spanish in Florida. The quintessential self-made man, Jackson launched his career in the legal profession. He was Tennessee’s first senator and representative in Congress and was Florida’s territorial governor. For the remainder of his life, Jackson was the most popular man in the nation. At the age of 78, he died of kidney failure. WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON (1773-1841) "Berkeley," Va.

Biography

Theodore Roosevelt was one of the most popular American presidents as well as one of the most important. With his zest for life and his love of controversy, he captured the public's imagination as no PRESIDENT since Andrew JACKSON had done. His willingness to shoulder the burdens of world power and to struggle with the problems caused by the growth of industry made his administration one of the most significant in U.S. history. Roosevelt was a strong nationalist and a dynamic leader, who greatly expanded the power of the presidency at the expense of CONGRESS , the states, and big business. He made the United States the guardian of the Western Hemisphere, especially in the Caribbean. Roosevelt was also the first president- reformer of the modern era. He increased regulation of business, while encouraging the labor movement. He led a long, hard fight for the conservation of natural resources, and he broadly advanced the welfare of the people as a whole. At the same time he was a compelling preacher of good government and responsible citizenship. Roosevelt was sworn in as president on September 14, 1901, following the assassination of President William

As noted with regard to the discussion of Sherman on the next page, as the Union Pacific moved west there were also created instant boom towns at the end of the line serving the grading crews and providing a "jumping off" spot for those heading further west. The instant towns were filled with lawless elements. Thus, the first rector of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Cheyenne, the Reverend Joseph W. Cook, noted upon his arrival in 1868:
The activity of the place is surprising, and the wickedness is unimaginable and appalling. This is a great center for gamblers of all shades, and roughs and troops of lewd women, and bullwhackers. Almost every other house is a drinking saloon, gambling house, restaurant or bawdy." For more on the early days of Cheyenne, see

of Camden County, Missouri
Compiled by Arthur Paul Moser Camden County [I] This county was settled by hardy frontiersmen in 1834 or 1835. The relations of the settlers with the Indians, who were then in possession of the county were very friendly. Kinderhook County was organized January 23, 1841, and Oregon was made the county seat. February 23, 1843, the name was changed to Camden, and the county seat to Erie. Linn Creek afterwards became the county seat. (Gazetteer of Missouri, Campbell , 1874, p. 99.) The County Seat The commissioners appointed in the act creating Kinderhook County, to select a site for the permanent seat of justice, met at the time specifiedthe second Monday of April, 1841and selected a site, and procured the title from the owners thereof by deeds dated on the 15th of that month. The land described in this deed was the southeast part of northwest fractional quarter of the same Section (25, Township 39 North, Range 17 West), it being all that portion of the quarter section lying south of the Osage River, containing seven acres, more or less. On April 12, 1841, the county court appointed the county clerk, James N. B. Dodson, as commissioner of the seat of justice, and at the same time named it Oregon. (

501. Supreme Court: River Bridge v. Warren Bridge
1837 - Supreme Court ruled that a charter granted by a state to a company cannot work to the disadvantage of the public. The Charles River Bridge Company protested when the Warren Bridge Company was authorized in 1828 to build a free bridge where it had been chartered to operate a toll bridge in 1785. The court ruled that the Charles River Company was not granted a monopoly right in their charter, and the Warren Company could build its bridge.
502. Supreme Court: Commonwealth v. Hunt
1842 - Case heard by the Massachusetts supreme court. The case was the first judgement in the U.S. that recognized that the conspiracy law is inapplicable to unions and that strikes for a closed shop are legal. Also decided that unions are not responsible for the illegal acts of their members.
