Henri Bergson (1859-1941)

Henri Bergson (1859-1941) Bergson was in influential idealist philosopher famous for his concept of or "life force", which animated his version of VITALISM. This mystical notion asserts that in addition to the complex organization of physical matter that goes to make up living organisms, there must also be some non-material, spiritual something-or-other added in to bring the entity to life. According to Bergson the original "life force" is passed down from one generation to another in all living things, and is the necessary creative force in an organism which produces growth, guides development, and produces new adaptations. He opposed scientific evolutionary theory as "mechanical". Another of Bergson's central metaphysical concepts is that of "duration", which is not the same as the concept of time in everyday usage or physical science. For him, "duration" is pure and non-material, and is the basis and origin of all things, including matter, motion, time (as we know it), consciousness, and "the ABSOLUTE". (Try to figure all that out!) Knowledge of "duration" can be gained only through INTUITION, rather than through any rational investigation of the world. He is thus an irrationalist . Bergson also justified class rule as "natural", and war as a "law of nature". No wonder he was made a member of the prestigious French Academy!

beauty
The characteristic feature of things that arouse pleasure or delight, especially to the senses of a human observer. Thus, "beauty" is the most general term of aesthetic appreciation. Whether judgments about beauty are objective or subjective has been a matter of serious philosophical dispute. Circular reasoning. The " informal fallacy " of (explicitly or implicitly) assuming the truth of the conclusion of an argument as one of the premises employed in an effort to demonstrate its truth. Example: "Since firefighters must be strong men willing to face danger every day, it follows that no woman can be a firefighter." Although arguments of this sort are formally valid because it is impossible for their conclusions to be false if their premises are true, they

    Bergson : Thinking Backwards
Modern European Philosophy by F. C. T. Moore Taking as its point of departure Bergson's insistence on precision in philosophy, this volume shows how relevant he is to much of contemporary philosophy. It will prove appealing to teachers and students of philosophy, cognitive science, psychology, religious studies and literature. F.C.T. Moore's book is the best introduction to the philosophy of Bergson available on the market today. It is interested in Bergson's own method; it does not assume that Bergson was trying to be like Bertrand Russell and failing. The chapters on laughter and on the theory of relativity are brilliant in the way they connect Bergson's "marginal" works to the core of his project. Anonymous Review

A különbség másban rejlik: a filozófus életében.
