ome of the famous intellectuals in the West and the East had the following things to say about Hinduism:
Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) American Philosopher, Unitarian, social critic, transcendentalist and writer: "In the morning I bathe my intellect in the stupendous and cosmogonal philosophy of the Bhagavad Gita in comparison with which our modern world and its literature seems puny."
(source: The Writings of Henry D. Thoreau - Walden 1989. Princeton Univ. Press. page 298). In the 1840s Thoreau's discovered India, his enthusiasm for Indian philosophy was thus sustained. In Indian contemplation he found a "wonderful power of abstraction" and mental powers which were able to withdraw from the concerns of the empirical world to steady the mind and free it from distractions. In 1853 he wrote: "The Hindoos are more serenely and thoughtfully religious than the Hebrews. They have perhaps a purer, more independent and impersonal knowledge of God... Besant, Annie
Pronunciation Key
Besant, Annie , English social reformer and theosophist, b. Annie Wood. She steadily grew away from Christianity and in 1873 separated from her husband, a Protestant clergyman. In 1879 the courts deprived her of her children because of her atheism and alleged unconventionality. As a member of the National Secular Society she preached free thought and, as a member of the Fabian society, socialism. With Charles Bradlaugh she edited the National Reformer and with him reprinted an old pamphlet on birth control, The Fruits of Philosophy, for which they were tried (1877) on a charge of immorality and acquitted. In 1889 she embraced theosophy Krishnamurti , whom she announced as the new Messiah. President of the Theosophical Society from 1907, she wrote an enormous number of books and pamphlets on theosophy. Her works include her autobiography (1893), Four Great Religions The Ancient Wisdom (1897), and a translation of the Bhagavad Gita See biographies by A. H. Nethercot (1960, 1963), R. Dinnage (1987), and C. Wessinger (1988).

Modern Religion
Arya Samaj Swami Dayananda (1824-1883) founded the Arya Samaj in 1875. Dayanand was born in Gujarat into a rich Brahmin family who worshipped Shiva. He was invested with Sacred Thread (Upanayanam) at the age of eight years. Three years later while keeping night at the Shiva Temple, he noticed rats eating away the Prasadams offered to God. He doubted the Deity's power and started to dislike Idol Worship. When his parents fixed his marriage, he left home, travelled widely, met holy men and widened his knowledge on religion and philosophy. He studied Vedas at Mathura. His teacher entrusted him with the duty of spreading Vedic Faith. Swami Dayanand founded the Arya Samaj (Society of Aryans) in 1875. He claimed the Vedas to be eternal, infallible and a complete revelation of God. He accepted the Doctrine of Karma and Rebirth, but was against Idol worship, caste distinction, pilgrimages, ritual bathing and polytheism. He also condemned child marriages and segregation of women. He opposed widow-remarriage. He introduced re-conversion to Hinduism, for converted Christians. They worship Agni (Fire), recite Gayathri Japam and read Vedas. The Samaj is a democratic organization without regular priests. Members are required to practice austerity, truth and devotion to God. Brahmo Samaj Raja Ram Mohan Roy (1772- 1833) was born into a Brahmin family in Bengal and experienced the orthodox practices of Hinduism in his youth. He studied the Quran, Buddhism and the New Testament. He disliked Idol worship and hated the practice of Sati, after seeing his brother's widow burnt alive on her husband's funeral fire. He fought to abolish polytheism, idol worship, the caste system, child marriage, animal sacrifice and Sati which is the practice of a widow being burnt alive on the funeral pyre.

Confounding or Amazing? The Multiple Deconversions of Annie Wood Besant
By Carol Hanbery MacKay After the death of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky in 1891, Besant headed the Theosophical movement in her typically controversial style for more than forty years, writing prolifically on the subject. She was the elected President of the Theosophical Society from 1907 until her death. She also participated actively in the stormy politics of India, where she influenced as much as she provoked Mohandas K. Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, while that land of ancient tradition struggled to free itself from British colonialism. The Life of Annie Besant . West proffers an interlude chapter on conversion, opening with the words, "With regard to Mrs. Besant's conversion to Theosophy nothing needs more to be stressed than that it was, absolutely, a logical conclusion to all that had gone before. It might almost have been prophesied, had anyone possessed intimate knowledge and subtle perception" (143). Reading the literature about Besant leads to the conclusion that she has not been well served by most of her Western biographers, who appear not to have read her autobiographical texts carefully. Unbiased accounts are in articles like Mark Bevir's "Annie Besant's Quest for Truth: Christianity, Secularism and New Age Thought" in
