MURDER
RISING ABOVE THE GENRE
by Anthony Chase

(Above) Katie White as Miss Casewell, Mystery man
and Richard Wesp as Mr.Paravicini in The Mousetrap The London production of The Mousetrap holds the distinction of being the longest continuously running play on the planet. Make no mistake, this is due to its delightful intrigue, not to its quality as drama. Within a disposable genre, The Mousetrap is endlessly consumable.
The demands of mysteries are well suited to the stage. Secrets to be discovered and looming threats drive plots, and though these journeys of storytelling can be brilliant, the plays seldom are.
There are, of course, others whose gifts as writers are sometimes obscured by the fact that they wrote mystery stories. In honor of the Studio Arena Theatre production of The Mousetrap, Artvoice offers this abbreviated tribute to some of the greats.
Agatha Christie
In all, Agatha Christie wrote over 66 novels, numerous short stories, and a series of romantic novels using the pen name Mary Westmacott. She is the single most popular mystery writer of all time, rivaled only by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes.
The first theatrical performance of an Agatha Christie mystery was an adaptation of The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Michael Morton. The play, which opened at the Prince of Wales Theatre in London on May 15, 1928 also marked the first stage appearance of Hercule Poirot, played by the young Charles Laughton.

Mystery Authors and their Detectives
Through Time
A Classic Summer Reading List for All Mystery Aficionados
School's almost out, but don't forget all that reading you've got to do for fall. No NOT Rocket Science for Dummies . I have some plans for my hammock this summer and they include checking in with some of those mystery authors I've always meant to spend some time as well as renewing my acquaintance with many of my other favorites. And there's something so orderly and academically correct about starting at the beginning of the genre and reading my way through to the present. Whether you are a long time reader of the genre or recently arrived, there's often the sense that you have missed something along the way. Are you well-versed in golden-age reading? Have you missed a classic hard-boiled dick along the way? Tie up your hammock, get out a big pile of books, put out your prettiest arsenic scented hanky and strap on your silencers. And let's all agree to put aside quadratic equations until at least the middle of July. Unless they're going to help solve the case.

Re: Stick to your guns.
Posted by ESC on February 05, 2000 at 07:42:46: In Reply to: Stick to your guns. posted by Frankie on February 04, 2000 at 16:23:52: : Anyone know the origin of the phrase "Stick to your guns". (Could it date back to Manifest Destiny?) STICK TO YOUR GUNS/STAND TO YOUR GUNS – It’s a military term. “Random House Dictionary of Popular Proverbs and Sayings” by Gregory Y. Titelman. (Random House, New York, 1996) states: “Stick to your guns – hold to your convictions and rights. The proverb has been traced back to the ‘Life of Samuel Johnson’ by James Bobswell (1740-95). It was first attested in the United States in ‘Seven Keys to Baldpate (1913) by Earl Derr Biggers (1884-1933)…” The “Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins” by Robert Hendrickson (Facts on File, New York, 1997) says the term may be military in origin and lists a mention of the term “as late as 1839, in a popular novel called ‘Ten Thousand a Year’ the words put in the mouth of a civilian named Mr. Titmouse.” “Fighting Words: From War, Rebellion, and Other Combative Capers” by Christine Ammer (NTC Publishing Group, Chicago, 1989) has the most detailed explanation, “…Less in doubt than managing to hit a target was a gunner’s obligation to stay at his post, whence the British term ‘stand to one’s guns’ (in America, ‘stick to one’s guns’), meaning to persist and not give way. James Boswell, Samuel Johnson’s biographer, writes in 1769, ‘Mrs. Thrale stood to her gun with great courage in defense of amorous ditties.’ A more perplexing use of this phrase occurred in a 1909 account about the staunchly pacifist Society of Friends: ‘The Quakers stood to their guns, and without any resort to brute force, finally won.’”

The Mary Pickford Theater Film Schedule
FALL 1999
Jump to: October November December This fall the Mary Pickford Theater presents a film retrospective in conjunction with the Library of Congress exhibition John Bull and Uncle Sam: Four Centuries of British-American Relations beginning November 15. While the relationship between the United States and the Mother Country are admittedly complex, British and American culture and ideas are constantly interwoven through film. As the two primary English-speaking countries, there has been a ready exchange of ideas and story formulas between the respective film industries. Our series (which will continue in on our spring calendar next year) illustrates this fruitful crosscurrent with films and television programming drawn from the holdings of the Library of Congress and the National Film and Television Archive and British Film Institute in London. RESERVATIONS may be made by phone, beginning one week before any given show. Call (202) 707-5677 during business hours (Monday-Friday, 9:00 am to 4:30 pm). Reserved seats must be claimed at least 10 minutes before showtime, after which standbys will be admitted to unclaimed seats. All programs are free, but seating is limited to 64 seats. The Mary Pickford Theater is located on the third floor of the Library of Congress Madison building If you would like to subscribe to our program guide you can submit your name and mailing address either by calling the Pickford Theater reservation line at (202) 707-5677 (24 hours a day) or by sending e-mail to
