CARYL CHURCHILL was born in London in 1938, the only child of middle-class parents. She began writing plays while completing her studies at Oxford. On leaving, she prepared to pursue the established London theatre, but her plans changed when she married David Harter, moved to the London suburbs, and had three sons. While raising her children she wrote radio plays which were produced. In 1972, Owners , a dark comedy, was produced at London's Royal Court Theatre Upstairs, a forum for new plays. The London and New York productions of this play elevated Churchill to the status of "promising playwright." Her next two plays, Objections to Sex and Violence and Traps were also produced at the Royal Court, but not until Light Shining in Buckinghamshire did she reveal her political voice and her non-naturalistic approach to theatre. This 17th century English civil war play was developed with the Joint Stock Company, an alternative theatre collective. The companion piece, Vinegar Tom , was developed with the Monstrous Regiment, a feminist-socialist theatre com- pany. Vinegar Tom looks at the terrifying witch hunts that took many women's lives. In 1978 she returned to the Joint Stock Company, and her collective scripting process to write her most commercially successful work

Six Months Among the Palm Groves, Coral Reefs, and Volcanoes of the Sandwich Islands
    LETTER I.

STEAMER NEVADA , NORTH PACIFIC, January 19. (page 6)
. . . A white, unwinking, scintillating sun blazed down upon Auckland, New Zealand. Along the white glaring road from Onehunga, dusty trees and calla lilies drooped with the heat. Dusty thickets sheltered the cicada, whose triumphant din grated and rasped through the palpitating atmosphere. In dusty enclosures, supposed to be gardens, shrivelled geraniums scattered sparsely alone defied the heat. Flags drooped in the stifling air. Men on the verge of sunstroke plied their tasks mechanically, like automatons. Dogs, with flabby and protruding tongues, hid themselves away under archway shadows. The stones of the sidewalks and the brick of the houses radiated a furnace heat. All nature was limp, dusty, groaning, gasping. The day was the climax of a burning fortnight, of heat, draught, and dust, of baked, cracked, dewless land, and oily breezeless seas, of glaring days, passing through fierce fiery sunsets into stifling nights. I only remained long enough in the capital to observe that it had a look of having seen better days, and that its business streets had an American impress, and, taking a boat at a wharf, in whose seams the pitch was melting, I went off to the steamer

Barry, Dave
Dave Barry does Japan = Deibu Bari ga "Nihon o suru" / Dave Barry. 1st ed. New York : Random House, c1992.
Not to insult Mr. Barry, but I was really surprised and gratified by his insightful and realistic portrayal of Japan from a visitor's perspective. He really nailed how language can be a barrier - forget deep understanding, just getting by can be a huge hurdle. Though he is always looking (stretching) for the comic angle, it is an affectionate and respectful portrait.
