Top Girls Caryl Churchill is a major woman contemporary British dramatist. Her plays have been cited for the challenge they offer to conventional forms of drama. The fact that Churchill, as a woman playwright, is conscious of the ‘maleness’ of the traditional structure of plays does not mean that she is driven by a need to change this. Rather, she seems to want to find a way of conveying her ideas without being tied down by convention. Simon Trussler’s comment (cited in the set textp.xxii) about Churchill’s writing seems insightful: The feminine quality of her writing may simply have to do with dialectic replacing conflict, and open-endedness being preferred to climax. As pointed out, the critique of feminist ambitions is an important and central theme. Her selection of women characters from the past and her contemporary times displays an affiliation to and empathy with the feminist cause and showing up the intolerable oppression women have been historically subjected to. Nevertheless, it never romanticises or sentimentalises ‘women’s issues’. Let us now take a closer look at the play Top Girls Act I begins with a managing director of an employment agency (presumably a woman of the 1980s) hosting a dinner party in a London restaurant to celebrate her promotion of ‘Top Girls’ agency. TEXT OF THE PANGKOR TREATY HELD ON 20TH.JANUARY, 1874. 1) Raja Abdullah was acknowledged as the legimate Sultan to replace Sultan Ismail who would be given a title and penchant of $1000 a month. 2) The Sultan will receive a British Resident whose advise had to be sought and adhered to in all matters except those pertaining to the religion and customs of the Malays. 3) All collections and control of taxes as well as the administration of the state had to be done under the name of the Sultan but arranged according to the Resident's advice. 4) The Minister of Larut would continue to be in control, but would no longer be recognized as a liberated leader. Instead, a British Officer, who would have a vast authority in administrating the district, would be appointed in Larut. 5) The Sultan and not the British government would pay the Resident's salary.
