Edmond John Peter Schmitt Papers (CSCT)
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Rev. Edmond John Peter Schmitt was born 16 March 1865 in New Albany, Indiana. He was the third child of Peter and Magdalena (Mouth) Schmitt, German-speaking immigrants from Lorraine, France. Schmitt spent most of his childhood in New Albany and attended the parochial schools of St. Mary's Church in that town for over eight years. Because of his father's pecuniary losses, young Edmond left school to work in a dry goods store (Scott's Blue Front store) and as a druggist. Anxious to complete his education, Edmond continued to study privately during the next five years and also began to collect a library. After his eighteenth birthday, Schmitt entered St. Meinrad's College, a school run by the Benedictine Fathers in Spencer County, Indiana, with the intention of entering the priesthood. Schmitt's parents somewhat opposed his vocational goal, fearing that their son's health was too delicate for such strenuous work. However, Edmond's purpose was serious and, after condensing the five-year classical course into two years, he entered the theological seminary at St. Meinrad's in 1885-86. There he completed a two-year course in philosophy and a three-year course in theology. During his years at St. Meinrad's, Schmitt became interested in historical research and began to write on various topics. He was a frequent contributor, under the pen name "Edmond Faber," to local newspapers and periodicals, including

The following is my current in progress list for Project Gutenberg. The list is intended to help those checking which works are being or have been done. No doubt there will be omissions and errors - if you see an error (for example a book you're working on which isn't listed) please email me and let me know so that I can correct the list. I'll do my best to upload a new copy of the list each week. The list is alphabetic by author and then within author by title of work. Works with unknown/inapplicable authors appear at the end. For each work the status of the work is given. For those works that are not yet released there is also the date when I last updated the record. So, if a work was last updated in 1995 not a lot seems to be happening with it! You may see an * after a release number. This means that as well as the release number shown other release numbers are also involved. The main Gutenberg site will give more details. This is to keep the size of this page down somewhat. General tip: the list is long so I suggest you save a copy on your computer - it will make it easier to search/browse. All the best

by Samuel A. Sizer
Guide to Selected Manuscript Collections was compiled in 1976 by Samuel A. Sizer, then Curator of Special Collections in the University of Arkansas Libraries. It contains brief descriptions of 211 collections, including a few that had not been processed at that time. The on line version updates the 1976 Sizer Guide to reflect work done on those collections in the division since then, and entries are integrated into the alphabetical list and the subject lists of electronic finding aids elsewhere on the Special Collections web site. A paper copy of the complete original Guide is available. At present, some manuscript collections in the division are accessible only through typewritten finding aids in the division reading room. However, as time and other resources permit, these are being converted to computer files and published on the Special Collections web site. Meanwhile, researchers should contact the division for further information. A B C D ... Y A] ALEXANDER, HENRY MACMILLAN, 1905-1969.

Our Young Folks published works by almost every nineteenth-century writer for children, from Sophie May to Harriet Beecher Stowe; it also featured fine engravings, including a handful by Winslow Homer. While the periodical's run ended in 1873, because my interest is only in works through 1872, the last year is not indexed here. For engravings, "drawn by" is the one given credit, except in the case of Landseer and of Frederick Church. KEY: /chromo = chromolithograph; /e = engraving; /p = piece is a poem; /s = piece is music

http://www.etherton.net/haltom.htm
THE HISTORY OF THE HALTOM FAMILY By Patrick R. Pearsey Preface There are no baptismal, will or bible records to support this conclusion it must be stated. The genealogy from William Holtham (who later used the spelling "Haltom") down to his supposed sons and in some cases, grandsons, is based on census and land records for the most part. Some educated guesswork has also been used when necessary but is so noted. The Haltom family migrated to North Carolina by 1753 to an area that became known as Anson County in 1763 and Montgomery County in 1779. There appears to have been three and possibly four sons of William Haltom Sr., who was probably born about 1700-10: John, Spencer, William Jr. and James. The descendants of John moved to Owen County, Indiana. Some of Spencer Haltom’s family stayed in North Carolina while others moved to Tennessee and later, Arkansas and Texas. William Haltom Jr. and his descendants moved to Tennessee and Arkansas. James Haltom, who used the spelling "Altom", may or may not be a son, but appears in South Carolina in the 1770’s. There are several character traits common to the widely separated branches of the Haltom family. Education was important to the Haltom family as no less than eight members worked as schoolteachers. Most family members knew how to read and write by 1850. The Haltoms have always been willing to serve their country in time of war. Haltoms served on both sides during the Civil War. Over 40 Haltoms enlisted, ¾ in the Confederate Army. Of these men, about ¼ died during the war. Four reached the rank of Lieutenant: Elisha S. Haltom, William B. Haltom, James H. Haltom and Thomas C. Haltom, all in the Confederacy. Serving the cause of justice is also a family trait, 9 members in all branches of the family serving as Justices of the Peace and as Sheriffs/Marshals during the 1800’s.

INTRODUCTION
The Manuscripts Department of the Academic Affairs Library of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has a long tradition for documenting the history and culture of the American South. Because African Americans have played an integral and leading role in forming that history, records relevant to African-American life and culture constitute a prominent portion of the department's holdings of nearly 14.5 million items. The majority of the collections documented in this guide are plantation records from the antebellum, Civil War, and Reconstruction period. Entries for these collections discuss topics such as slaves as plantation labor, and later, the hiring of freedmen. There are also several twentieth-century collections described that cover topics such as desegregation, bussing, race relations, and civil rights. The entries are arranged alphabetically by collection name. Listed after the collection name is the collection number and the date span of the entire collection. The entries describe only the portion of the collection pertaining to African Americans, with complete summary records for collections available through the library's online catalog.
