    What is Teddington?
Teddington is a smallish town in the London Borough of Richmond Upon Thames , located on the River Thames inbetween Twickenham and Kingston. The main drag through town is divided in two by the railway bridge. On one side is the fairly busy Broad Street (see picture, below) with its branches of Tesco, Woolworths and Boots, and on the other side, heading towards the river, the somewhat sleepier High Street, with various shops going in and out of business as the months go by.
Broad Street, Teddington, yesterday A theme throughout the town is hairdressers, about 6 million of them last time I counted, with estate agents and Italian restaurants almost catching up with this figure. To the town's credit, there is a cheeseshop (for Monty Python fans), and an original public lavatory that doesn't look like a Tardis or cost 50p a go. Other fave venues of mine are the Vinery café, for all-day breakfasts, and Red Peppers, for their garlic mushroom pizza.
    Some Teddington Landmarks
Teddington Studios Various companies have had film or television studios at this location on Broom Road over the years. In 1958, the premises were bought from Warner by the ABC television company, which later became Thames Television. This signalled the beginning of the studios' fame, as many popular TV series were made here by Thames. Some of the shows you might remember (or still watch) include "Opportunity Knocks", "Magpie", "The Benny Hill Show", "The Morecambe and Wise Show", "Rainbow" and "This is Your Life".

    Historical and Biographical Note
The publishing enterprises of Samuel Sidney McClure are an important facet of early twentieth-century American journalism. The McClure Syndicate, started by Samuel Sidney McClure in 1884, was the first successful company of its kind, and was largely responsible for introducing many American and British writers to a national public. His later venture, McClure's Magazine , contained the influential "muckraking" articles of Ida Tarbell, Ray Stannard Baker, and Lincoln Steffens; it also had the distinction of promoting the then-unknown writer, Willa Cather. Although S.S. McClure's tenuous business competency would cause him to lose control over these ventures in the early part of the twentieth century, other members of his family, most notably his cousin, Henry Herbert McClure (d. 1938), were able to maintain a more steady career in the publishing world through the 1930s.
