Algernon Blackwood (1869-1951) was a prolific fantasy and horror writer whose total production consists of more than 200 short stories, 12 novels, a couple of plays, an autobiography and even some poetry. Over 50 distinct book editions of his works have been published in the US and UK, counting the reprint collections. Today, his books are mostly out of print, but he is far from forgotten. His style of writing is very intense emotionally, and holds a strong fascination for the reader. The supernatural element is carefully woven into the plot which often turns the ordinary and familiar into something mysterious and awesome. Many of his tales take place outdoors in some magnificent setting of nature, like the wilderness of Canada, the swamplands of the Danube river or the Black Forest in Germany. Nature spirits, haunted houses, the spirits of the dead and other ancient sorceries all abound in his strange tales. Blackwood's private life was almost as odd and mysterious as his tales. A travelling man, he saw a great many places in the world. He was born in Kent, England, 1869. As a young man, he lived in New York and later on settled in Switzerland. Before that he had been moose hunting in Canada, hiking in Italy, France and Spain, and touring in Egypt, Austria and Sweden. After WWI, he found himself back in England. Besides writing, his activities were very diverse. He served as a secret agent in Switzerland at the end of WWI. His interest in the supernatural led him to visiting a spiritualist camp, exploring haunted houses and seeking out gurus like Gurdjieff and Ouspensky in France at a time when they were fashionable amongst the artistic jet set of the day.

The heading of "The House of Arabu" consists of seven lines from this ancient text, also known as "Descent of Ishtar to the Nether World." The quotation seems to be from Morals in Ancient Babylon , by Joseph McCabe (Little Blue Book #1076), slightly modified (in the quotation, a second clause in each of the first two lines has been dropped; the first part of these lines, and the rest of the quotation, is identical to the McCabe text). THE DEVELOPMENT OF PAGANISM:
    HISTORY, INFLUENCES AND CONTEXTS, 1880-2002

'A longing for the wood-world at night': the Influence of the Literature of the Occult Revival on Modern Paganism
Nick Freeman, Department of English, University of the West of England For Erricson had got upon his old subject: that the gods were not dead, but merely withdrawn, and that even a single true worshipper was enough to draw them into touch with the world, into the sphere of humanity, even into active and visible transformation. Algernon Blackwood, 'The Sea Fit', Pan's Garden (1912) . . . he was filled with a longing for the wood-world at night, with a desire for its darkness, for the mystery of it beneath the moon. Arthur Machen, 'Midsummer', Ornaments in Jade (1924) This paper will seek to address ways in which literature from the so-called 'occult revival' of the has influenced Paganism in the 20th century. Focusing on the work of writers such as Arthur Machen (1863-1947), Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) Algernon Blackwood (1869-1951), and Saki ([H.H. Munro] 1870-1916), it will examine the ways in which the 'weird tale' emerged from the late Victorian interest in the occult and passed into a wider imaginative framework. As such, their work has had considerable impact both on major figures in post-war Paganism (Gerald Gardner was a Kipling enthusiast, for example) and on a wider reading public. Significantly, major reprints of the work of Machen, Blackwood and Saki coincided with the upsurge of popular interest in the occult during the 1960s. All of these writers specialised in short fiction, and this had led to their being frequently anthologised, both for adults, and notably, for children.

In fact, there are almost no ghosts to be found in this book. Blackwood (1869-1951), who must rank as one of the greatest English language fiction writers ever, is also one of literature's best-kept secrets, a genius who exquisitely married mind-bending metaphysical revelation with unbearable suspense. Calling these "ghost stories" is like calling Moby Dick a "fishing tale" or Les Miserables a "detective story" it simply doesn't begin to reveal the scope and depth of what is contained. It's hard to compare Blackwood with any other writer, because he was so unique. He was a major influence on H. P. Lovecraft, but was vastly more compelling, subtle and profound. You might think of him as Hermann Hesse meets a maturer version of H. P. Lovecraft.

Indeed a number of these large horror anthologies were published in the 30s, collecting much of the best British (and some American), horror, mystery and thriller fiction of the late-Victorian and Edwardian eras. Hutchinson, for example, published the massive (1000+ pages) The Evening Standard Book of Strange Stories A Century of Creepy Stories , and A Century of Ghost Stories . Montague Summers edited his famous The Supernatural Omnibus (1931), Dorothy L. Sayers her Great Short Stories of Detection Mystery and Horror , and John Gawsworth his Creeps series. What can I say, they don't write them like they used to. list of authors gives one a good idea of the quality of the writers presented. Even so, there are some stories by lesser known authors which are also very good. My personal favourite, A.J. Alan's "The Diver," a tale of a haunted diving board at the pool in a men's club, isn't particularly atmospheric or well written, but is interesting for its unique venue and the skeptical character who tells it. There are tales of Voodoo (W.B.Seabrook's "Goat-cry, Girl-cry"), horror at sea (W.H. Hodgson's "The Voice in the Knight"), detection (R. Austin Freeman's early Dr. Thorndyke tale "The Aluminium Dagger" and Baroness Orczy's
