A BIT ABOUT WORDS - Julian Burnside Bushrangers In the second edition of the Oxford English Dictionary, Rolf Boldrewood is quoted 184 times in illustration of about 160 words. Appropriately so. Boldrewood (Thomas Alexander Browne, 1826 – 1915) was the first Australian author to capture faithfully the emerging Australian variant of the English language. Although born in London, he came to Australia as a child and spent the rest of his life here. He ran a farm in Victoria and was later a police magistrate and a goldfields commissioner in the Victorian and NSW goldfields.. He had a good ear for idiom and had the courage to write it down faithfully. His characters are the first in Australian literature to speak real Australian, with no sense of parody. Boldrewood did for the Australian language what Tom Roberts did for the Australian landscape: he removed the European filter and saw Australia through Australian eyes. Boldrewood’s “Robbery Under Arms” is a comprehensive glossary of the language of bushrangers, and Dick Marston is the first truly Australian character in our literature. When Ned Kelly ambushed the police at Stringybark Creek he called “Bail up.

Miildenhall Collection; Pictorial Collection Penelope Layland reveals that the early history of the National Library is inextricably linked with that of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Library T here is more to the relationship between the National Library of Australia and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Library than meets the eye, as is evident when one is firmly reminded that it was the Parliamentary Library which spawned the more famous National Library, not the other way around. Perhaps it would be fairer to say that it didn’t take long after the establishment of the Parliamentary Library, upon Federation in 1901, for the dual nature of the enterprise to become apparent. This was to be not only a library which would service the needs of the fledgling Federal Parliament but also, from the beginning, there was an awareness of the need to record and preserve the new nation’s documentary heritage as it was created. The word ‘parliamentary’ may have dominated the title in those early years (as the word ‘national’ was to dominate later), but this was always a two-headed idea, two institutions lumped for convenience under a single heading.

Austral¹tí umìlci a spisovatelé Prvními umìlci, jim¾ se Austrálie stala námìtem pro jejich obrazy, byli Evropané, kteøí sem pøipluli lodí Endeavour. Av¹ak teprve v 50. letech 19. století, kdy zemì zakusila éru prosperity diky zlaté horeèce, do¹lo umìní veøejného uznání. První psané dokumenty pøedstavovaly deníky nejstar¹ích usedlíkù - to bylo sto let pøedtím, ne¾ zaèaly vznikat dìjiny australské literární tradice a kdy Rolf Boldrewood (1826 - 1915) uveøejnil Robbery Under Arms (1888), dobrodru¾ný román o banditech z bu¹e.
Umìlci
Takzvaná heidelberská ¹kola, pojmenovaná po oblasti kolem Melbourne, byla první typickou australskou malíøskou ¹kolou na konci 19. století. K jejím reprezentantùm patøili Tom Roberts (1856 - 1931), Charles Conder (1868 - 1909), Frederick McCubbin (1855 - 1917) a Arthur Streeton (1867 - 1943). Byli silnì ovlivnìni plenérovou malbou francouzských impresionistù a sna¾ili se zachytit pøíznaèné svìtlo a nekoneènou otevøenost australské krajiny. V prvních letech 20. století se Hansu Heysenovi podaøilo ztvárnit celkový obraz Austrálie jemnì zbarvenými eukalypty a osobitým pojetím zdej¹í krajiny.
