  • The BONNELL name has also been spelled as: Bonnel, Bunnell, and Bunnel when referring to the SAME people in old census lists and documents! The name may have originated from French "Buenells". The SOUNDEX Code for BONNELL is B540 (Buenells is B542). There were 2 Bonnell's as 1st class passengers aboard the RMS TITANIC
    - fortunately, they were also survivors:
Miss Elizabeth Bonnell and her niece Miss Caroline Bonnell. The OLDEST house in Elizabeth, NJ, is the Nathaniel Bonnell House , at 1045 East Jersey Street, erected before 1682 by Bonnell, a French Huguenot.

    Committee Members Present:
Claire Hoffman, Katherine Holvoet, Thomas Karel, Chuck Malone, Rebecca Spencer, Denise Arial, Angela Bonnell, Jerry Frobom, Ann Liebist, Barbara Miller, Lynne Stuart, and Karrie Peterson. Katherine Holvoet moved that the minutes from annual meeting as published on the Education Committee Web page be approved. The motion was seconded and approved. The Chair reported on the meeting of Steering Committee. Liaison Reports were given for FDTF by Karrie Peterson, IDTF by Barbara Miller, and SLDTF by Katherine Holvoet. Claire Hoffman, liaison to the Education Assembly, indicated the assembly would be meeting on Monday morning. The Chair announced that the literacy assembly liaison has not been appointed; if anyone is interested, let her know. The Chair noted that most contributors to the Government Information and Depository Management Clearinghouse have moved the pages they have created to their individual servers. When people use the site they are in actuality clicking on links. When members leave the Education Committee, they should notify the Chair if they want to continue maintaining their pages.
    Continuing Business
    Welcome Wagon
Tom Karel reported that he is almost finished with the Welcome Wagon list of Web sites for new documents librarians and others that work with documents. The committee approved the list, agreed that it should fit on one piece of paper, and suggested that the entries be annotated. Tom agreed to prepare a draft of the annotations and send them to the members for comment. The committee agreed that the handout should be sent to libraries in GPO depository shipments, to regional libraries, to new members, and library schools. It should also be on the Government Information and Depository Management Clearinghouse page. When the Welcome Wagon is up and running, an article about it should go in DttP.

    A Triple Eclipse on Jupiter
    Credit:
    E. Karkoschka ( UA NMSU ), NMSU 0.6-m Telescope Explanation: Part of Jupiter is missing. Actually, three parts appear to be missing. In reality though, the three dark spots seen in the above photograph are really only shadows. The unusual alignment of three of Jupiter 's moons between the Jovian giant and the Sun was imaged last November 10th. The shadows of Io Callisto , and Ganymede move across Jupiter as these moons progress in their orbits. It was by noting the times of eclipse of Jupiter's moons in 1675 that Ole Roemer became the first person to measure the speed of light . When a shadow from Earth's Moon crosses the Earth's surface, the people inside the shadow see an eclipse of the Sun. Robert Nemiroff MTU Jerry Bonnell Jerry Bonnell USRA

One of the brightest globular clusters in our Milky Way galaxy is the pictured M15, the fifteenth object on Messier's list of diffuse objects on our sky. Most stars in globular clusters are older and redder than our Sun, which is about 5 billion years old. For more information on M15 see The Electronic Universe Project's write-up. http://www.imsa.edu/edu/astro/astrometry/
The Great Debate: The Size and Scale of the Universe
    Introduction
Our current understanding of the place of the earth and sun in the universe is a fairly recent one. This unit will investigate the history and the science of the early 1900's which lead up to the realization that the universe is expanding and set the stage for the development of the Big Bang theory. The approach we will take is to understand what was known about astrophysics during the earliest parts of the 20th century. We will use primary sources, whenever possible, and summaries of scientific thought as we investigate this fascinating topic. In the process, you will be challenged to learn the science as it was at that time, and as it stands today.
    Purpose
The purpose of this inquiry is not to learn history, although this is an added benefit of the approach we are taking. Instead, the purpose is to learn the science behind the science, the advances of the time period, and how they have influenced our modern cultural views of time and space. This investigation provides a framework for learning the topics covered in an introductory astrophysics course, but hopefully within a context more closely linked to humanity than you are likely to find in a textbook or standard course.

    Table Legend
The "Iteration Count" is the first iteration that produces a given data set. If there were more than one iteration that produced say a 6 million digit number, I only saved the first one. The formula I used for the "Iteration / Digit Ratio" is: I/D. The formula I used for the "Calculations Needed" is: (D*I)/2. The "Largest Pal Found Even" column is the largest palindrome found within the data set with an even number of digits. There may be more than one with the same number of digits. For example, 17059999995071 is the only 14 digit palindrome in the 3 million data set, but on the other hand, the 5 million data set has 6 - twelve digit palindromes (and no 14's), but 828540045828 is the largest of them. The number in parentheses, is the number of digits of the number. That way, I don't have to keep counting them. :-) The "Largest Pal Found Odd" column is the largest palindrome found within the data set with an odd number of digits. Again, it is the largest found, even if there is more than one. Digit Milestone Iteration Count Iteration / Digit Ratio Calculations Needed Largest Pal Found Even Largest Pal Found Odd 1 Million
