Brief Historic Review
The work was began in London July 2 nd 1865 by William Booth which was a methodist pastor, he was devoted with his wife Catalina Mumford Booth to the mission of preaching in the slums of the East of London like an independent evangelist. The William Booth’s idea was that converted people in his mission were incorporated to the churches that existed already in London, but the churches didn't want to receive these people of the streets in their congregations. So he didn't have another alternative that began a church especially for them. All were welcome, poor and rich, and they gave to all a task with the objective of saving to the world. ‘The Christian Mission’ was born. In 1878 William Booth adopted the name of ‘The Salvation Army’ for his organization. The missions became ‘Corps’, the members ‘Soldiers’, the ministers or pastors ‘Officers’ and William Booth ‘General’. This ‘Army’ adopted uniforms, bands, flags and martial music. To reach their objective they met in carps, theaters, dancing rooms and at open airs. At the beginning this ‘Army’ was pursued by religious people, because they considered it so informal and outside of the conventional thing and for criminals' gangs because it interfered in its traffic of the misery. But the Army attacked successfully social necessities as the hunger, the poverty and the abandonment. Booth wrote a book titled: ‘In darkest England and the way out’ that became model of the modern social services.

'GENERAL' WILLIAM BOOTH
FOUNDER OF THE SALVATION ARMY William Booth was born in Nottingham in 1829. At the age of 13 he was sent to work as an apprentice in a pawnbroker's shop to help support his mother and sisters. He did not enjoy his work because it made him only too aware of the poverty in which people lived and how they suffered degradation and humiliation because of it. During his teenage years he became a Christian and spent much of his spare time trying to persuade other people to become Christians too.
When his apprenticeship was completed he moved to London, again to work in the pawnbroking trade. He joined up with the local Methodist Church and later decided to become a minister.
After his marriage to Catherine Mumford in 1855 he spent several years
William Booth in old age Booth caricatured in 1882 as a Methodist minister, travelling all around the country, preaching and sharing God's word with all who would listen. However, he felt that God wanted still more from him, and that he should be doing more to reach the ordinary people. He returned to London with his family, having resigned his position as a Methodist minister.
One day in 1865 he found himself in the East End of London, preaching to crowds of people in the streets. Outside the Blind Beggar pub in Whitechapel, some missioners heard him speaking and they were so impressed by his powerful preaching that they asked him to lead a series of religious meetings they were holding in a tent . The tent was situated on an old Quaker burial ground on Mile End waste in Whitechapel. The date for the first meeting was set for July 2nd 1865. To the poor and wretched of London's East End, Booth brought the good news of Jesus Christ and His love for all mankind.

The Salvation Army Return to home page Salvation Army, international religious and charitable organisation dedicated to the propagation of the Christian faith and to helping persons in need. The English Methodist minister William Booth founded it in 1865 in London. It was originally founded as the Christian Mission, with the aim of carrying on evangelical and welfare work among the inhabitants of the poorest areas of London, and remains active primarily in inner cities. The mission rapidly expanded its activities; in 1878 it was reorganised along its present quasi-military lines and was renamed the Salvation Army. Booth was accorded the title of general, and the officers and members of the organisation were given military ranks and titles in accordance with their duties. The organisation was later organised into territories, each of which had jurisdiction over a specified country or other major geographical area. The international character of the Salvation Army dates from 1880, when a group of its members went to the United States and established an American branch in New York. The movement subsequently spread to all parts of the world. The Salvation Army was particularly active during World War I and World War II, rendering a wide variety of services to Allied soldiers. After World War II the Salvation Army promulgated a programme called Marching Forward, the main objectives of which included helping the homeless with the provision of soup-kitchens and overnight shelter, the promotion of evangelism, the prevention of juvenile delinquency, aid to veterans and their families, extensions of services in police courts and prisons, and programmes to end human suffering in countries devastated by war.

THE CITIES AND D.L. MOODY Cities grew because of the industrial revolution. With urban growth came serious problems; problems that still defy solution. This page looks at the city's problems and then examines the life of the greatest revivalist of the late 1800s. I. BACKGROUND When winds of revival swept the country, no one completely ignored the cities but most of America's population was rural. By the 1830s, evangelist C.G. Finney began concentrating on city evangelism. He believed the nation's cultural life flowed from the cities t o rural areas. While other revivalists held occasional meetings in cities, Finney focused on the urban masses. Two factors complicated evangelistic work in America's cities. First, many farm boys headed for the cities to find work. You see this movement from the farm to the city as early as the 1820s. When these young men reached the city several changes occurred. The city, with its many temptations and material opportunities, undercut their rural value system. Second, continuing immigration decreased work opportunities for native born Americans. Most of the immigrants settled in the cities. European immigrants also found themselves cut off from their previous value system. American cities grew rapidly. Chicago illustrates this best. Located in America's heartland, Chicago was a collection of seventeen houses in 1833. Eighty years later, Chicago had grown into the fifth largest city in the world and by 1900 it's population numbered 1,700,000.

(c.a.1910) Please do not let this vision go unread. It is a key to revival in these last days! A Vision Of The Lost By William Booth (1829-1912) On one of my recent journeys, as I gazed from the coach window, I was led into a train of thought concerning the condition of the multitudes around me. They were living carelessly in the most open and shameless rebellion against God, without a thought for their eternal welfare. As I looked out of the window, I seemed to see them all . . . millions of people all around me given up to their drink and their pleasure, their dancing and their music, their business and their anxieties, their politics and their troubles. Ignorant - willfully ignorant in many cases - and in other instances knowing all about the truth and not caring at all. But all of them, the whole mass of them, sweeping on and up in their blasphemies and devilries to the Throne of God. While my mind was thus engaged, I had a vision. I saw a dark and stormy ocean. Over it the black clouds hung heavily; through them every now and then vivid lightening flashed and loud thunder rolled, while the winds moaned, and the waves rose and foamed, towered and broke, only to rise and foam, tower and break again.
