William Booth
A idéia deu certo.

WILLIAM BOOTH
William Booth was born in Nottingham, England. He was converted to Christ through the efforts of a Methodist minister and soon became interested in working with the outcasts and the poor people of Nottingham. He preached on the streets and made hundreds of hospital calls before he was twenty years of age. From 1850 to 1861 he served as a pastor in the Methodist church after which time he and his wife let the church and stepped out by faith in evangelistic work in East London. It was there that he organized the East London Christian Revival Society. Out of this beginning came the Salvation Army with its uniforms, organization and discipline. By 1930 there were branches in fifty-five countries. Its main emphasis under General Booth was street preaching, personal evangelism and practical philanthropy. More than two million derelicts have professed faith in the Lord Jesus Christ through the work of the Salvation Army since its founding by the "General." Select A Portrait

GENERAL WILLIAM BOOTH
F ounder of the world-wide religious and humanitarian organization, the Salvation Army, General William Booth together with his missionary family was a key player in the Revivalist Reform Movement of the 19th century. Believing religion should alleviate the sufferings of the poor and convert sinners into ministers of salvation, Booth organized a new church based on fiery sermons, military-styled ministry, and a grass roots campaign throughout the slums of the world. Born in Nottinghamshire, England, in 1829 and baptized in the Church of England, William Booth embraced Methodism at the same time that he supported the Chartists, a radical working class movement urging political, economic, and social equality. Inspired by the religious awakening sweeping England, at sixteen he and a band of friends began to hold cottage meetings where they preached, sang and strove to lead souls to salvation by asking them to recommit themselves to Christ. These meetings, together with works of charity among the local poor and sick, foreshadowed the Salvation Army, which would come into being some twenty years later. The Hallelujah
Band
In the intervening period between 1845-1865, Booth served as a Methodist minister; met and married the woman who was to inspire and share his ministry, Catherine Mumford; broke with the Wesleyan tradition; and undertook an evangelical mission in Staffordshire where within seven weeks Booth claimed 1700 souls who professed to have found salvation. The extraordinary success of this ministry prompted William and Catherine Booth to travel throughout England organizing open air revival meetings, whose most original feature was The Hallelujah Band, a motley crew of converted sinners whom the Booths enlisted to help convert others. As one contemporary described them (in words which are echoed in Vachel Lindsay's poem):

Booth "Never!" Catherine cried form the first row of the balcony, before her husband could utter a word. William Booth, a Methodist minister, had been faulted for welcoming the poor, ne’er-do-wells and street toughs to his services. Church leaders wanted him to promise that the welcome mat would be rolled up and put away. Catherine answered for him. Little wonder that she wrote, "The more I see of fashionable religion, the more I despise it." William Booth was born in Nottingham, England, into a home that knew the bitter taste of poverty. His father died when he was fourteen, and William became a pawnbroker's apprentice. He never forgot the anxiety, the bleakness and, above all, the degradation of penury. He would eventually startle Britain with his book, In Darkest England and the Way Out Yet Booth was never tempted to become a secular programmer of social change: he was always the evangelist. Converted at age fifteen in a Wesleyan chapel, he ever after wanted only to declare that the Word of Truth which brings Life to its hears and sets them on the Way of discipleship. Ordained a Methodist minister, he was soon dismissed by church authorities as a "reformer" and was stripped of his clergy-standing. He found a temporary new home among New Connexion Methodists, but a few years of "settled ministry" convinced him that this was not his vocation. Together with his wife, Catherine Mumford, he began conducting preaching missions in Wales, Cornwall, and the Midlands – areas that had suffered the worst economic and human blight in the shadow-side of industrialization. Once again, church authorities attempted to appoint him to a settled ministry. By now he had wearied of their inability to recognize his calling. He left. In 1865 the Christian Mission opened in East London. In 1878 it was renamed The Salvation Army.

Churches turned away Booth's band of drunks and convicts so the preacher founded his own group - The Salvation Army. Sir Winston Churchill, who knew a thing or two about generals, put William Booth in his top three. He recognised that the Nottingham-born crusader was fighting his own war — to save mankind - and his weapons were a Bible, a bugle and a drum. Ultimate victory would always remain an unassailable target but the mighty general influenced the public conscience all around the world and established bridgeheads in more than 80 countries. Along with Jesse Boot, he ranks as Nottingham's most distinguished son, with a legacy still thriving more than 80 years after his death. ‘God's Soldier' came from the poor streets of Sneinton — born in 1829 at 12 Notintone Place - and began work as a pawnbroker's assistant. But he was burning with religious fervour from an early age and used to preach on street corners. He once caused a sensation when he led a band of ragged boys into the best pews in a local Methodist chapel. Nottingham could not hold the young firebrand and, at 18, he left for London where he became a travelling evangelist.

March 10 ~  Measure of His Surrender Sacred Contracts "The greatness of a man's power is the m e a s u r e of his surrender." ~ William Booth Amid the slums of London, England , Methodist minister William Booth (1829–1912) founded the Salvation Army in 1865 to wage spiritual warfare on poverty without formal religious services. "I must assert in the most unqualified way that it is primarily and mainly for the sake of saving the soul that I seek the salvation of the body," said Booth. With uniforms, flags, and ranks, his goal was to preach the gospel and meet human needs without discrimination. "He who helps in the saving of others, Saves himself as well," observed German epic poet Hartmann Von Aue. On this day in 1880, Booth established the first U.S. Salvation Army in New York City. Like its London counterpart, the mission became a quasi military organization. The leader was called "general" and followers were "soldiers." The war to help mankind continued. In 1904, Booth's daughter Evangeline (1865-1950) was named the U.S. commander, the organization's first woman general. She handed out donuts during World War I and operated soup kitchens during the Depression. Today the Salvation Army operates in over 103 countries and offers a range of social programs to help others: aid to children , halfway houses, shelters for the homeless, food for the hungry, and relief for disaster victims.

"A Vision of the Lost"
by William Booth
William Booth
Founder of the Salvation Army n one of my recent journeys , as I gazed from the coach window, I was led into a train of thought concerning the condition of the multitudes around me. They were living carelessly in the most open and shameless rebellion against God, without a thought for their eternal welfare. As I looked out of the window, I seemed to see them all... millions of people all around me given up to their drink and their pleasure, their dancing and their music, their business and their anxieties, their politics and their troubles. Ignorant- willfully ignorant in many cases- and in other instances knowing all about the truth and not caring at all. But all of them, the whole mass of them, sweeping on and up in their blasphemies and devilries to the Throne of God. While my mind was thus engaged, I had a vision.
I saw a dark and stormy ocean. Over it the black clouds hung heavily; through them every now and then vivid lightening flashed and loud thunder rolled, while the winds moaned, and the waves rose and foamed, towered and broke, only to rise and foam, tower and break again.
In that ocean I thought I saw myriads of poor human beings plunging and floating, shouting and shrieking, cursing and struggling and drowning; and as they cursed and screamed they rose and shrieked again, and then some sank to rise no more.
