Other People on Organized Religion
Contents Updated: Wednesday, February 03, 1999 It is surprising to us, brought up indoctrinated with Christianity, how many people, despite the social pressures they faced, showed their independence of spirit and their contempt for the superstitious religions of the Patriarchs. The source of these quotations is Joseph McCabe's Biographical Dictionary, available in full on the web at the Infidels site. Beethoven, during his most productive years had little religious feeling. He once rebuked a friend who had written, "With God's help," by saying, "Man help thyself". When he was dying he yielded to the pressure of Catholic friends and let a priest administer the sacraments, but as the cleric left the room Beethoven quoted the Latin words of the ancient Roman theater: Applaud, my friends, the comedy is over. Christians pretend he meant the comedy of his life but, addressed to the friends who had persuaded him to accept the rites against his better judgement, the meaning is unmistakable. Hubert Howe Bancroft (1832-1918), an authority on Western America who wrote 39 volumes on its history wrote, "There is but little religion in the Churches, and that little graft is strangling."

Thomas Babington Macaulay (1800-1859) showed great precocity, at the age of eight planning a Compendium of Universal History . In his youth he also composed three cantos of The Battle of Chevoit , an epic poem in the manner of Scott's metrical romances; a lengthy poem on Olaus Magnus; and a piece in blank verse on Fingal . At Trinity College, Cambridge, he twice won the Chancellor's Medal for English Verse, and became a Fellow of Trinity. With "Milton," his first essay in the Edinburgh Review (August 1825), he established a literary reputation that increased throughout his life; in 1829 he declined the editorship of the journal because of the location of its headquarters. The next year he took his seat as a Whig Member of Parliament, and in the subsequent debates on the Reform Bill he won recognition as a leading political orator. In public life he served in India on the Supreme Council (1834-1838); represented Edinburgh in Parliament (1839-1847, 18521856); and held the posts of Secretary of War (1839-1841) and Paymaster-General (1846-1847).Despite these governmental obligations, he continued to write articles and books on a wide range of topics. He published Lays of Ancient Rome in 1842; a popular collection of his

The Zincali (Intro) George Borrow (1803-1881) The Zincali or an account of te gypsies of Spain (Intro) PREFACE IT is with some diffidence that the author ventures to offer the present work to the public.
The greater part of it has been written under very peculiar circumstances, such as are not in general deemed at all favourable for literary composition: at considerable intervals, during a period of nearly five years passed in Spain - in moments snatched from more important pursuits - chiefly in ventas and posadas, whilst wandering through the country in the arduous and unthankful task of distributing the Gospel among its children. Owing to the causes above stated, he is aware that his work must not unfrequently appear somewhat disjointed and unconnected, and the style rude and unpolished: he has, nevertheless, permitted the tree to remain where he felled it, having, indeed, subsequently enjoyed too little leisure to make much effectual alteration. At the same time he flatters himself that the work is not destitute of certain qualifications to entitle it to approbation. The author's acquaintance with the Gypsy race in general dates from a very early period of his life, which considerably facilitated his intercourse with the Peninsular portion, to the elucidation of whose history and character the present volumes are more particularly devoted. Whatever he has asserted, is less the result of reading than of close observation, he having long since come to the conclusion that the Gypsies are not a people to be studied in books, or at least in such books as he believes have hitherto been written concerning them.

    of Alfred Russel Wallace

The following compilation represents an index of personal names (and a few organizations) that appeared in Wallace's writings. To produce the index I examined every page of every item listed in the "Wallace Bibliography" list, keeping track both of each name that appeared, and how many times it appeared. Only those names that Wallace referred to in more than simple citation terms are included (i.e., names that appeared as part of systematic synonymies, straight citations, etc. are not included unless Wallace also mentioned the persons involved in some further fashion in the main text of his writing). Once I had a "raw" list of names, I attempted to verify and/or distinguish the persons involved using various reference tools (Wallace often refers to people by their last name only, so a few errors are possible in this regard).

BORROMINI, FRANCESCO (1599—1667), Italian architect, was born at Bissone in I 599. He was the chief representative of the style known in architecture as “baroque,” which marked a fearless and often reckless departure from the traditional laws of the Renaissance, and often obtained originality only at the cost of beauty or wisdom. One of the main opponents of this style was Barocchio (q.v). Borromini was much employed in the middle of the 17th century at Rome. His principal works are the church of St Agnese in Piazza Navona, the church of La Sapienza in Rome, the church of San Carlino alle Fontane, the church of the Collegio di Propaganda, and the restoration of San Giovanni in Laterano. - He died by his own hand at Rome in 1667. Engravings of his chief compositions are to be found in the posthumous work, Francisci Borromini opus Architectonicum they may be laid. W wieku lat dwudziestu mia³ gotowe rêkopisy poematów t³umaczonych z walijskiego i staroduñskiego.

Who was George Barrow? Leave it to the encyclopedias of today and the Internet to brush over this writer who traveled extensively and as he traveled, not only learned the customs and languages of the country but became so much a part of the story. One could excerpt from his writings enough materials to create other books in their entirety in such a way that they would become marvels in their own right. Such is the case of The Bible in Spain . True, this is his narrative of how he introduced the bible to the Spanish in 1835, but it's not a story about the bible, it's about the people and how they in their own way become a part of a vision of their beautiful country with all its diverse regions and environment. It is also a study on integration of peoples of different backgrounds. It's a documentation of the results of the Spanish Inquisition, one of man's early attempts to solve the problem of how different peoples should live together. The answer for the time was to rid the country of all but the chosen. Did this succeed? Hardly. Or it's a study of architecture, the buildings of peasants, to nobility and all between, from the lowly mud huts, to those with slate and stone, to cathedrals, village squares and castles.
