Boswell, James (1740-1795) A Scotch writer and lawyer, famous for his Life of Samuel Johnson . He came to London from Scotland, and devoted himself assiduously to studying Johnsons character, spending some years in close intimacy with the great lexicographer. His subject was an anti-Scot who virulence Boswell had somewhat softened during their tour of Scotland some years earlier. The book is considered by some to be the best biography ever written. Boswell left so many letter sand diaries that perhaps more is known about him than any other 18 th Century man. A "Boswell factory" at Yale employs several people, full-time, sifting through the papers. Return to B Index

A contempory cartoon of James Boswell. In one hand he holds "My Journal" and in the other "Materials for the Life of Sam Johnson LLD". James Boswell of Auchinleck's first claim to fame was as biographer of Samuel Johnson. In recent years, it his voluminous journals which have claimed our attention, for the detailed and opinionated chronicle they provide of the culture and society of his time. For the Ayrshire historian, the journals offer an unrivalled insight into the people and institutions which ruled the county in the second half of the eighteenth century. Whether friend (for example John Hamilton of Sundrum - "I esteemed him as an honest man") or sometime foe (for example Sir Adam Fergusson of Kilkerran - "a man who distinguished himself by his regard for religion, though his politics were bad"), Boswell recorded his thoughts on his neighbours and fellow lairds. They dined together, rode to county meetings in Ayr, deliberated on defence, the state of the nation, the improvement of their estates, exploitation of minerals, making the roads, and Boswell recorded much of what passed in his journals, usually giving particular credit to his own thoughts or witticisms. The Boswell papers reside at Yale University in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Yale has published a long series of Boswell Editions divided into two main categories: Trade Editions, for the general reader; and Research Editions, for the academic market. This site (Ayrshire History) has a list of the volumes available -

"We cannot tell the precise moment when a friendship is formed. As in filling a vessel drop by drop, there is at last a drop which makes it run over; so in a series of kindness there is at last one which makes the heart run over."

(from Life of Johnson) Scottish lawyer, essayist, known for his two-volume biography THE LIFE OF SAMUEL JOHNSON, LL.D (1791). Boswell met Samuel Johnson in May 1763 and the two became fast friends. Boswell was born in Edinburgh the son of Alexander Boswell, Lord Auchinleck, a judge in the supreme courts of Scotland. Boswell attended the University of Edinburgh (1753-1753), where he studied arts and law. He was keeping a journal and writing poems from the age of 18. At 19 he made his first visit to London, and a few years later, on his second visit, Boswell met Dr. Johnson. In 1769 Boswell married his cousin Margaret Montgomerie; they had seven children. Though his visits to London were restricted to the vacations of the Court of Session, Boswell maintained his contact with Johnson, and was elected to the Literary Club in 1773. The members included some of the most famous men of the time. With Johnson, who described Boswell as 'the best travelling companion in the world', the friends made their celebrated tour of Scotland and Hebrides.

In the past he has been dismissed as a 'cultural schizophrenic' but it is now accepted that Scots of his generation had a very troubled identity. He began a letter to the Public Advertiser by saying, "I am by birth a North Briton, as a Scotchman must now be called...". Political Union a generation before Boswell's birth had meant that institutions and power had transferred to London and Westminster - if a person wanted fame and glory they would have to travel south. The son of a respected Judge, Boswell studied for the law and began practising in Edinburgh in 1766. He made frequent trips to London, and it was on one of these visits that he met Samuel Johnson in 1763 in a bookshop. This was the year that he had made an extensive tour of Europe and had decided that his ambitions lay in the direction of writing. He hoped to win Johnson's agreement to write his biography. He persuaded Johnson to accompany him on a tour of Scotland: Johnson would write an account of the trip while Boswell would collect information for the biography. Boswell's own diaries turned into

Robert Burns
Robert Burns (1759-1796) is considered Scotland's greatest poet. Best known for his feeling descriptions of country life and for satires against the political and religious hypocrisy of the day, Burns wrote much of his poetry in his broad Scots dialect . The eldest child of William and Agnes Burnes (the elder Burnes spelled his name with an "e"), Burns was born in Ayrshire and lived a life of hard labor and poverty as he struggled with his father to make a series of poor farms productive. By 1886, with his father dead, and more failed farms to the family credit, Burns nearly emigrated to Jamaica. His first volume of poetry, however, was published that year to great acclaim, and Burns became the darling of Edinburgh. Further editions of poetry developed Burns' international reputation. Late in his life, supporting himself as an exciseman, Burns helped to collect and also wrote a wide-range of traditional Scottish songs. B oswell G uide

I imagine the first question anyone will ask is what is a column called "Scottish Flotsam". I guess we will have to begin with what is "flotsam". Among the definitions of the word are "things washed ashore" or "miscellaneous trifles". Well, we believe you can find some great treasure on the ocean shore. But you will never know what you will find or its value. So we decided that is what this column is - flotsam. We wanted a place to put things that didn't fit anywhere else and might be of interest. Each item could be a column itself and might be some day but for now it will be the flotsam, which washes our way. Lets begin with a famous Scot. James Boswell (1740-1795) Boswell was born in Edinburgh on 29th October 1740, the eldest son of Alexander and Euphemia Boswell. His father was an Ayrshire laird and advocate who, on appointment to the Court of Session in 1754, took the judicial title of Lord Auchinleck. Boswell studied at Edinburgh and Glasgow Universities, his father intending him for a career as an advocate, although his own ambitions were for a literary or a military career. He ran off to London in 1760 and was received into the Roman Catholic church. He was persuaded that this James Boswell conversion, which would have precluded public office or professional advancement, was unwise and after a taste of the wilder side of London life returned home to his studies and continuing tension with his father. Eventually, in 1762, he was permitted to pay an extended visit to London, where he made full use of his freedom, overindulging in drink and sex. However in Davies's bookshop in May 1763 he met the man who was to become the central figure in his life - Samuel Johnson. Their opening conversation was unpromising:
