Biographical Sketch
William Cowper Brann, born January 4, 1855 in Humboldt, Illinois, was an author, lecturer, and newspaper editor. Following his mother's death in 1857, he was placed by his father, Noble Brann, a Presbyterian minister, with William and Nancy Hawkins. At thirteen years of age Brann left his foster home to begin working at a series of jobs that included bellboy, printer, professional baseball pitcher, opera company manager, and, eventually, newspaper reporter. After settling in Rochelle Illinois, he married Carrie Belle Martin in 1877. They had three children: Inez, Grace Gertrude, and William Carlyle. Brann's caustic and vitriolic journalistic style made enemies that prompted frequent changes in his employment. In 1891 following disagreements with the editor-in-chief of the HOUSTON POST, and the death and probable suicide of his first daughter Inez (age 13), he moved to Austin, Texas, where he launched his own publication, the AUSTIN INCONOCLAST. Although renamed the TEXAS ICONOCLAST in 1892, neither volume was successful. In that same year Brann became editor of the SAN ANTIONIO EXPRESS. In 1893, following other freelance editorships, Brann sold the Austin publication to William Sydney Porter ("O. Henry") who rechristened it THE ROLLING STONE.

BRANN, WILLIAM COWPER (1855-1898). William Cowper Brann, journalist, was born on January 4, 1855, in Coles County, Illinois, the son of Noble J. Brann, a Presbyterian minister. After his mother's death in 1857, he was placed in the care of a neighboring farm couple, William and Mary Hawkins. In 1868, when he was thirteen and in the third grade at school, he slipped away one night, with his few belongings in a small carton he could carry. He never returned, nor did he receive any further formal schooling. He worked as a hotel bellboy, then as a house painter's helper, and finally as a printer's devil and cub reporter. On March 3, 1877, he married Carrie Belle Martin at Rochelle, Illinois. They had two daughters and a son. In Houston in 1890 his daughter Inez took her own life, an event for which Brann blamed himself. He moved from St. Louis to Galveston to Houston and then to San Antonio and gained a reputation as a brilliant though vitriolic editorialist. He worked for the St. Louis Globe Democrat from 1883 to 1886, then for the Galveston

Freethought on the American Frontier
edited by Fred Whitehead and Verle Muhrer Book review by Wm. B. Lindley This is not a book to read straight through. It is a book to sample, to browse, to put down and pick up again. It is a potpourri of freethought gems. I had thought it might be a history, with wax and wane, development, and all that. It isn't. A 22-page introduction does the history, and then the editors dip into the literature, much of it long forgotten, that was created right there, on the American frontier. Samples: Red Jacket, Seneca chief and orator, replying to a Christian missionary ca. 1820; Robert Owen's 1826 Declaration of Mental Independence, 50 years after the original D of E and 50 years before Ingersoll's Centennial Oration; frontier humor (you can forget about reverence); late 19th-century poetry. (Let's face it: most of it is doggerel, but the sentiments are fine - not noble, but very dear to the heart. An exception is the item by Walt Whitman on p. 5; it is magnificent by any standard.) There is a chapter on William Cowper Brann (1855-1898), a Texan with no tolerance for hypocrisy. He knew how to use words that wound, and took on the Baptists in, of all places, Waco. He was murdered for his pains, as one might expect.
