BRISBANE - THE CITY OF STARS!
Australia's third-largest city, Brisbane (population 1.3 million) is being urged to adopt the motto of its San Franciscan namesake sister city, and call itself The City of Stars. After all, the Oz city was named after a noted astronomer, Sir Thomas Brisbane, who catalogued 7385 stars in what was then the largely uncharted southern sky. Brisbane's Planetarium, a popular tourist attraction, is named after him.. Don't imagine for one moment that Brisbane California (population 4000), which adjoins San Francisco, adopted its motto just to compete with that other City of Stars, Hollywood. Sheri Schroeder, City Clerk of Brisbane, California, says "We are called The City of Stars because of our tradition of putting six to eight-foot wooden stars with Christmas lights on them on our houses during the holiday season. Since Brisbane is a hillside community it is quite beautiful." Many properties offer panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay, Mount Diablo, the East Bay, San Francisco and San Bruno Mountain. Brisbane, Albert 1809-90, American social theorist, b. Batavia, N.Y. After studying with Charles Fourier in Paris, he returned to the United States as an enthusiastic advocate of Fourierism. His Social Destiny of Man (1840) aroused widespread interest, especially that of Horace Greeley, who gave him a column in the Tribune. Brisbane was instrumental in the founding of the phalanxes at Brook Farm and Red Bank, N.J. The failure of most of the other communal experiments was disastrous for the Fourierist cause, but Brisbane reaffirmed his convictions in his General Introduction to Social Science (1876). His wife, Redelia Brisbane, edited and wrote an introduction to his autobiography, published posthumously as Albert Brisbane: A Mental Biography (1893, repr. 1969). His son, Arthur Brisbane (1864-1936), was editor of the New York Evening Journal and other Hearst papers. See biography by O. Carlson (1937).

The heading of "The House of Arabu" consists of seven lines from this ancient text, also known as "Descent of Ishtar to the Nether World." The quotation seems to be from Morals in Ancient Babylon , by Joseph McCabe (Little Blue Book #1076), slightly modified (in the quotation, a second clause in each of the first two lines has been dropped; the first part of these lines, and the rest of the quotation, is identical to the McCabe text). They're amazed by almost everything they see, but especially by two shiny, silver walls that move apart and back together again. The boy asks his father, "What is this, Father?" The father responds, "Son, I have never seen anything like this in my life. I don't know what it is." While the boy and his father watch wide-eyed, an old lady in a wheelchair rolls up to the moving walls and presses a button. The walls open and the lady rolls between them into a small room. The walls close and the boy and his father watch small circles of lights with numbers above the walls light up. They continue to watch the circles light up in the reverse direction. The walls open up again and a beautiful young woman steps out. "Son," the father says, "go get your mother." The great 15th-century explorer/navigator has not one but two statues in and around Central Park. CRISTOFORO COLOMBO
    (ca. 1451-1506) Location:
Columbus Circle, Broadway, 8th Avenue and Central Park South
    Sculptor: Gaetano Russo
Year installed: Once much more prominent because of its 40-foot height, the Columbus Monument was placed at the southwest corner of Central Park in 1892, the 400th anniversary of Columbus' arrival in the New World. Its detail features representations of "The Genius of Discovery" regarding a globe, and bas-reliefs of Columbus putting ashore and the Niña, Pinta and Santa Maria.
Six bronze rostra, representing ships' prows, adorn the column. The statue owes its presence here to the lobbying efforts of Italian-Americans. Il Progresso editor Carlo Barsotti led the efforts and arranged a grand unveiling attended by 10,000. Columbus Circle is also notable for its spectacular water displays, which have been there since 1960. They were created by Douglas Leigh, who also designed some of Times Square's more spectacular neon signs of the period. The undistinguished New York Coliseum occupied its western end for many years; the Coliseum's old site is now where AOL/Time-Warner's massive national headquarters is being constructed. (1/2003: They'll have to change the name: AOL/Time-Warner have divorced...)
