Patrick Bronte and his wife Maria, had a tragic destiny. A year later, Charlotte discovered Emily's poems which she decided to publish under the pseudonyms of Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell. Charlotte wrote then The Professor, which couldn't find any publisher, but the following year, her Jane Eyre, Emily's Wurthering Heights, and Ann's Agnes Grey were all published under the Bell pseudonyms. In 1848, her brother Branwell died, after he had become an alcoholic and a drug addict. Emily died a few months later, and Ann died the following year. At the age of 4 she lost her mother, being then the eldest of a family of 4. In 1826, after Mr. Bront‰ had brought home a box of wooden soldiers for his son to play with, Charlotte, Emily, Branwell and Ann, playing with the soldiers, formed the idea of writing about an imaginary world, which they named Angria. In 1844, the three Bront‰ sisters decided to found a school. It turned to a great disaster. In 1852, the Rev. Nicholls proposed marriage to Charlotte. Her father opposed himself violently at first. Charlotte, who was not in love, refused him. They finally got married in 1854, but Charlotte caught a pneumonia while she was expecting a child, and probably seized upon this illness as an opportunity to end her life. Charlotte died in 1855 after a long and painful illness.

The family moved to the Haworth parsonage in 1820, (picture one), which is now the Bronte Parsonage Museum. Picture two shows the main street with the Black Bull public house on the right, a regular drinking haunt of Branwell, their brother. The two following photographs are the apothecary where Branwell Bronte bought his opium. Branwell was an alcoholic and an opium addict, addictions that ultimately led to his death at the age of 31. Haworth parsonage Haworth's main street Apothecary plaque The village stocks are to the right of the steps leading to the parish church (the Church of St. Michael and All Angels) where the Brontes' father, Patrick, was the curate. The Bronte family are not buried in the churchyard but in a vault beneath the church itself. Anne Bronte, the youngest of the three sisters, died in Scarborough and is buried in St. Mary's churchyard, overlooking the sea. All died of tuberculosis at a young age. Charlotte (1816-1855) was 38, Emily (1818-1848) died aged 30, and Anne was only 29 when she died in 1849. Patrick outlived all his family and died in 1861 at the age of 84. There were three other children in the family apart from the famous authors - Maria 1814-1825, Elizabeth 1815-1825 and his only son, Branwell 1817-1848.

So Big by Edna Ferber Nathaniel Hawthorne
Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem, Massachusetts. The Puritan overtones of his novel Scarlet Letter are no accident, as Hawthorne was descended from Puritan ancestors. When Nathaniel’s father, a ship captain, died on a voyage, Nathaniel’s mother moved the family to Maine where her brothers lived. Hawthorne attended Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, where he was a classmate of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. After graduation, Hawthorne returned to Salem with hopes of becoming a writer. His first writing attempts were short stories. Although these stories met with some popularity, they were not financially successful. Hawthorne took a job in a customs house to pay his living expenses. A collection of Hawthorne’s short stories was published in 1837 under the name of Twice-told Tales. This was followed by Mosses from an Old Manse. But it was not until 1850 that Hawthorne gained recognition as a noteworthy author and a master of allegorical tales. With The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne’s genius for symbolism and his Puritan heritage proved to be a winning combination. While The Scarlet Letter received tremendous acceptance, Hawthorne feared that it was a bit dismal and vowed to write a happier novel for his next work. In 1851, Hawthorne’s The House of the Seven Gables was published. Gable’s plot celebrated the power of love over a family curse. The Scarlet Letter and The House of the Seven Gables were Hawthorne’s most famous works.

    Writers In Love: Love Letters
    January 8, 1845 ...Day and night I find neither rest nor peace. If I sleep I am disturbed by tormenting dreams in which I see you, always severe, always grave, always incensed against me. Forgive me then, Monsieur, if I adopt the course of writing to you again. How can I endure life if I make no effort to ease its sufferings?...If my master withdraws his friendship from me entirely I shall be altogether without hope; if he gives me a little - just a little - I shall be satisfied - happy; I shall have reason for living on, for working. Monsieur, the poor have not need of much to sustain them they ask only for the crumbs that fall from the rich man's table. But if they are refused the crumbs they die of hunger. Nor do I, either, need much affection from those I love. I should not know what to do with a friendship entire and complete - I am not used to it. But you showed me of yore a little interest, when I was your pupil in Brussels, and I hold on to the maintenance of that little interest I hold on to it as I would hold on to life...

    CHARLOTTE BRONTE (1816-1855)
    ON THE DEATH OF ANNE BRONTE
    THERE 's little joy in life for me,
    And little terror in the grave ;
    I 've lived the parting hour to see
    Of one I would have died to save.
    Calmly to watch the failing breath,
    Wishing each sigh might be the last ;
    Longing to see the shade of death
    O'er those belovèd features cast.
    The cloud, the stillness that must part
    The darling of my life from me ;
    And then to thank God from my heart, To thank Him well and fervently ; Although I knew that we had lost The hope and glory of our life ; And now, benighted, tempest-tossed, Must bear alone the weary strife. NIGHT I LOVE the silent hour of night, For blissful dreams may then arise, Revealing to my charmed sight What may not bless my waking eyes. And then a voice may meet my ear, That death has silenced long ago; And hope and rapture may appear Instead of solitude and woe.
