The Broadview Anthology of Victorian Poetry and Poetic Theory
Broadview, 1999, 1492 pp., ISBN 1-55111-100-4, $35.95
Description:
The Broadview Anthology of Victorian Poetry and Poetic Theory is the most comprehensive collection of poetry from the period ever published. Included are generous selections from the work of all major poets, and a representation of the work of virtually every poet of significance, from Thomas Ashe at the beginning of the era to Charlotte Mew at its end. The work of Victorian women poets features very prominently, with extensive selections not only of the work of canonical poets such as Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Christina Rossetti, but also of that of poets such as Augusta Webster for which high claims have recently been made by critics. The anthology reflects (and will contributed to) the ongoing reassessment of the canon that is central to English Studies today; in all sixty-six poets are represented. The editors have included complete works wherever feasible including the complete texts of Tennyson's In Memoriam and of a number of other long poems. A headnote by the editors introduces the work of each poet, and each selection has been newly annotated.

TELECOM GROUP FIGHTS DIGITAL WIRETAP BILL
The U.S. telecommunications industry is lobbying to limit the surveillance capabilities accorded law enforcement officials by the 1994 Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA). The Federal Communications Commission is currently reviewing the technical requirements of the law, and organizations like the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA) say that the FBI is unduly expanding their spy operations while passing the costs on to consumers: "The issue before the FCC is whether law enforcement will be able to use CALEA as a back-door means to expand existing wiretap capabilities and whether consumers in their monthly bills should shoulder the multibillion dollar costs of that expansion," says CTIA's president. CALEA requires telecommunications carriers to ensure their equipment, facilities and services are designed to enable law enforcement agencies to conduct electronic surveillance. Emily Brontë July 30 December 19
Emily Bronte (pen name: Ellis Bell) Emily Brontë was the middle of the three famous Brontë sisters who were novelists and poets. She wrote under the name Ellis Bell. Emily Brontë is credited as one of the major sources of inspiration for Emily Dickinson poetry (the other was Ralph Waldo Emerson). Her major work, Wuthering Heights , and her only known novel, was often treated in the 19th century as a work of immorality, too much passion. Critics do not know when Wuthering Heights was written nor how long it took to write. Some critics have argued that Branson Brontë, brother to the three sisters, wrote this book, but most critics disagree.

Wuthering Heights Links Back to Overview Emily Jane Bront - Biography Emily Jane Brontë was born 20th August 1818 as the daughter of Patrick Brontë, the perpetual curate of Haworth, Yorkshire. Patrick Brontë (1777-1861), who came from Ireland and was a cleric of the Irish Church of England, had changed his name from Prunty/ Brunty to Brontë. The Brontës were married in 1812, had six children, Maria, Elizabeth, Charlotte (1816-1855), Patrick Branwell (1817-1848), Emily Jane and Anne (1820-1848), however the mother died in 1822. The two elder sisters, Maria and Elizabeth died in infancy. After their mother’s death, their aunt Elizabeth Branwell cared for the children. The very intelligent Patrick Branwell died at an early age in 1848 as a result of his drug addiction. The Brontë children were mainly educated by their father, but the three sisters also attended the subsidized Clergy Daughters’ School at Cowan Bridge, which always remained as a very negative experience in their memory. Because of their father’s poverty, the Brontë sisters had to earn their living as governess’ or school teachers, which was the only way to support themselves for girls of their station. However, all three felt that this occupation did not agree with their natures and abilities. Writing became for them an outlet for their feeling of oppression and dissatisfaction with their social circumstances. In 1846 they published a volume of poems under the pseudonyms of Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell, however without success.

Emily Jane Bronte
Emily was one of six children born to Patrick Bronte, an Irish Anglican minister. She briefly attended school with her elder sister Charlotte, but spent most of her formative years at home in Yorkshire. Together with her sister Anne, to whom she was particularly close, Emily created a fantasy land inspired by the reading of works such as Arabian Nights. Her strong attachment to her home, in particular to the Yorkshire moors, made Emily desperately ill and unhappy on the three further occasions she went away: first to another school, then as a governess and finally for a stay in Brussels with Charlotte in order to study languages. She was a silent and reserved person, without close friends.
In 1845 Charlotte is said to have discovered Emily's poetry and to have ensured its publication, but Emily had no literary success in her lifetime. Wuthering Heights, with its themes of love and hate, had a very hostile reception and was even considered to have the potential to deprave and corrupt. Emily died of tuberculosis at the age of 30.

, Emily was later prone to creating motherless characters. She got along best with Anne, the youngest, and they created the world of Gondal together . At 17, Emily went to the Roe Head School (her first experience with school since a very brief stint at the infamous Clergy Daughters' School) where Charlotte was then teaching. Emily managed to stay only three months before her nerves became too frazzled and she had to go home. She simply couldn't stand not being able to write and think about Gondal as much as she wanted to Emily found a teaching job at Law Hill School in September 1838. The hours were grueling: 6 AM to 11 PM, with half an hour's break, and though Emily managed to do all right in her first term , her health broke under the stress and she returned home around April 1839. She never again attempted to find any kind of a job. In 1842, Charlotte dragged Emily to a school in Brussels . Emily did well (her teachers were especially impressed with her clear, smooth writing style) but made no friends, as was typical for her. She went back home as soon as she possibly could. Emily had been writing poetry all this time, mostly on Gondal, and in the autumn of 1845, Charlotte found these poems and read them. She then approached her sister and urged her to publish the works. Emily was furious, and Anne interceded, giving her own Gondal poems to Charlotte to help make peace. After editing the poems to remove some of the Gondal-ness, Emily agreed to the publication of
