A Guide to the Seeking St. Louis Galleries in the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park Currents
The Seeking St.Louis exhibition consists of three galleries. In Currents , 1764-1904 (Upper Level), you will encounter the stories of people who built St. Louis amid powerful currents of change. In Reflections , 1904-2000 (Upper Level), you will learn the stories of people who reshaped the city into a complex metropolitan region. On the museum's Main Level, visit A Place in Time , which looks more broadly at the issues St. Louisans have faced across time. In each of these galleries, you can explore St. Louisans' responses to three basic challenges - challenges we continue to face today:
  • How do we provide for ourselves?
  • How do we get along with each other?
  • How do we find meaning in our lives?
With this guide, you can explore the ways that African Americans in St. Louis have responded to these challenges. You'll also see how their history affects our lives today.
Please begin on the Upper Level of the museum, in the

What Is a "White Nigger" Anyway?
By Andrew D. Todd
Mr. Todd is a graduate student in history at West Virginia University. There has been a more or less considerable furor over Sen. Robert Byrd's (D-WV) usage of the term "white nigger." Everyone seems to think that they know what this means. But do they? Before one can decide if the words are offensive, one must first know what they mean. Mary Mostert, at Banner of Liberty, thinks Byrd meant "poor white trash" in general, and Bill Clinton in particular. However, this has a somewhat dubious fit to the context. I should like to explore an alternative possibility.
The term "white nigger" is a marking, or qualification, of "nigger," a means of describing a group which resembles "niggers" in some respects but not in others. There seem to be two major bodies of early usage: 1) a white person who is conspicuously exploited. and 2) a member of the concubine class, intermediate between black and white.(3) This latter usage is characteristic of the slaveholding plantation regions, and is probably not directly relevant to West Virginia. To account for what a West Virginian means by "white nigger," one should look at usage in economically similar regions. For example, in

Chapter 1: "FROM SLAVERY TO FREEDOM" Overview The first chapter of the program focuses on the liberation that comes with literacy. From African-American slaves to adult learners of today, reading and writing change lives in profound ways. The chapter is based on Slave Narratives and includes the Federal Writers' Project's oral interviews with former slaves that were conducted in the 1930s. This segment can be used to introduce the genre of slave narratives and/or autobiographies. It can also supplement studies in U.S. History, Civil Rights History and African-American studies. The focus on slave narratives can also be used to encourage personal essays, storytelling and journaling.
