    David Howenstine
April 6, 2002 William Wells Brown, Clotel, or The President's Daughter As an African American author and former slave, William Wells Brown is not quite like any of the other writers we have read this semester. Whereas Frederick Douglass and Phyllis Wheatley were both slaves at one point, they, for the most part, wrote much more political discourses. Douglass 's Narrative , despite its literary qualities, is an attempt at describing slavery in a realistic and moving way. Similarly, Wheatley 's poetry and letters possess a high degree of political awareness and ironic distance. Brown, however, seems to be doing something quite different and much more sentimental. The actual story of Clotel functions within the same themes and plot devices of the sentimental fiction we have read from white authors, especially, ahem, Lydia Maria Child Whether Clotel should be approached differently because Brown was a former slave is hard to say. I think it could be potentially problematic to ascribe especial worth to his story simply because of his race. Yet, at the same time, his background as a slave necessarily changes his perspective on the traditional abolitionist sentimental story. Whereas Lydia Maria Child may have written the Quadroons from the perspective of a white woman, Brown's re-appropriation of that story comes from the radically different perspective of a former slave. Thus, I do not think we should avoid Brown's history when considering
