Browning was long unsuccesful as a poet and financially depenent upon his family until he was well into adulthood. He became a great Victorian poet. In his best works people from the past reveal their thoughts and lives as if speaking or thinking aloud. A man can have but one life and one
    death,
    One heaven, one hell.
Robert Browning was born in London as the son of Robert Browning, a wealty clerk in the Bank of England, and Sarah Anna Wiedemann, of German-Scottish origin. He received scant formal education, but had access to his father's large (6,000 vols) library. In his teens, Browning discovered Shelley , adopting the author's confessionalism in poetry. His first poems Browning wrote under the influence of Shelley, who also inspired him to adopt atheist principles for a time. At the age of 16 he began to study at newly established London University, returning home after a brief period. In 1833 Browning published anonymously PAULINE: A FRAGMENT OF A CONFESSION, which was noted by J.S. Mills. In 1834 he travelled to Russia and made in 1838 his first trip to Italy. Browning's early poetical works attracted little attention until the publication of PARACELSUS (1835), which dealt with the life of the

Classic Literature Writer Writer: Robert Browning Dates: 1812-1889 R obert Browning was born on May 7, 1812 in Camberwell, which is south of London. His birthday falls within a couple of months of the births of Dickens and Thackeray. He was the eldest of 2 children, born to Robert and Sarah Anna Browning. His father was a bank clerk. He attended London University for a short while in 1828, but received most of his education by readinghis from his father's library. His first poem, Pauline, was published when he was 21. It was soon followed by Paracelsus (1835) and Sordello (1840). A year later, Pippa Passes, the first in a series entitled Bells and Pomegranates was published; the remaining seven parts appeared between 1841-46. In 1846, Browning eloped with Elizabeth Barrett and lived with her in Italy until his death in 1861. Various difficulties made the poet's requested burial in Florence impossible, and his body was returned to England to be interred in Westminster Abbey.

    ROBERT BROWNING
    ELIZABETH BARRETT BROWNING (1806-1861)
T he love story of Robert Browning and Elisabeth Barret often reminds of the courtship and marriage of their contemporaries, Richard and Clara Schumann. In both romances a possessive father tries to prevent his daughter's match; in each case a sense of spiritual kinship, shared artistic purpose, and deep passion prevail over the obstacles, and, interestingly, in both stories it is the woman who is the more famous artist at the start of the relationship.
Robert Browning enjoyed a privileged only-child existence, complete with excellent tutors, travel, and the leisure to pursue his literary inclinations. His early critical reception was eclipsed by that of Tennyson's. While his publication of PARACELSUS in 1835 did win him recognition, his next published work, SORDELLO (1840), met with such vituperation as to require almost two decades to repair his standing. It was during this period of emotional fragility that he read Elizabeth Barrett's 1844 poems. Elizabeth Barrett had received a classical education and displayed a literary gift from girlhood. Her first collection of poetry was so highly regarded that she was considered to succeed Wordsworth as Poet Laureate. Made an invalid as much by a back injury she suffered as a youth as by the controlling presence of her jealous father, EBB was a reclusive, bedridden spinster-poetess when Robert Browning initiated a correspondence with her in 1845. Their love letters, some of the most eloquent in the language, led to a meeting from which sprang up between them, despite the objections of her father and Elizabeth's own feelings of inadequacy for wifedom, an intense passion that led to their secret engagement and subsequent elopement to Italy in September 1846.
