Old Harbor Station
Category: Museums/Galleries Location: Provincetown Address: Race Point Beach, end of Race Point Rd., Provincetown, MA, USA Phone: no phone Not far from the present Coast Guard station there's an old U.S. Life Saving Service building, which was towed here by barge from Chatham in 1977 to rescue it from an eroding beach. It is reached by a boardwalk across the sand, and plaques along the way tell about the lifesaving service and the whales seen offshore. Inside are displays of such equipment as Lyle guns, which shot rescue lines out to ships in distress when seas were too violent to launch a surfboat, and breeches buoys, in which passengers were hauled across those lines to safety. At 6:30 on Thursday nights in summer there are reenactments of the old-fashioned lifesaving procedure. COST: Donations accepted; Thurs. night $3. July-Aug. daily 10-4.

Walking Tours This walk starts at the Sandwich Glass Museum, ends at the Dunbar Tea Shop, and takes 2 to 4 hours, depending on the number of stops you make; you'll cover about 1 1/4 miles. Your best bet is to explore the village on any midsummer day between 10am and 4pm, except Sunday, when some spots are closed. You may park (free with admission) at the Sandwich Glass Museum, 129 Main St. (tel. ), a well-curated collection tracing the town's history with an emphasis on glass made in Sandwich from 1825 to 1888. Farther down Grove Street is Old Cemetery Point, overlooking peaceful Shawme Pond, about one-third of a mile down the road. Read the historic headstones and keep an eye out for box turtles. Head back through the center of town and observe the exterior of Old Town Hall, on Main Streeta magnificent Greek Revival edifice, complete with Doric columns. It still houses some town offices. Continue down Main Street, past the First Church of Christ

    Townscape:
Sandwich Defines Quaint By Karen White T here is a sense in Sandwich that the buildings belong. The weathered gray Capes, the irregular saltboxes, the imposing Colonials in the town's historic center are nestled in the nooks and crannies of a landscape that pitches and rolls like the sea. The roadways wind, as if following old Indian paths, and stone walls grow out of the ground as naturally as grass.
Sandwich center may be one of the few places on earth that is more beautiful because Man has placed his hand upon it.
The beauty of the place is a great drawing card, for both tourists and new residents. It's like stepping into a postcard, not a glossy shiny advertisement but one of those old postcards with the scalloped edges, pale colors and longhand script. Even old timers admit to its charm, fondly calling their hometown "quaint."
But there is more to Sandwich than pleasant aesthetics. It's the oldest town on the Cape, founded in 1637 by a group of 60 families from the Saugus/Lynn area. It's known world-wide for not one but two reasons, glassmaking and Thornton W. Burgess. It's a tourist destination and a Boston bedroom community and the beginning of the historic Old King's Highway.
It also boasts the best in modern life. About seven years ago, Debra Woodman Flodberg was attracted to Sandwich by its good school system, comfortable residential mix of ages and incomes, and a "Cape Cod quality of life."
