"Isabel Peacocke was a 'real Kiwi' journalist and author, hailed by Pat Lawlor as a writer of 'prodigious output' and 'one of the most active and cheerful women in New Zealand'. Although she wrote verse, light romances, newspaper articles, stories for magazines, plays and radio broadcasts for station 1YA, her specialty was children's books; between 1915 and 1939 she produced one almost annually. These were published (and frequently sold out) in England, but sufficient numbers reached our shores for the writer to be rated sixth - after Edith Howes and Charles Dickens - in a survey of children's favourite authors by the Canterbury Public Library in December 1926." Spiritwalk Library Project Gutenberg http://www.gutenberg.net Project Gutenberg is the Internet's oldest producer of FREE electronic books (eBooks or eTexts). It intends to put as many books on-line as possible and to gather these on line works into one central location. It is a terrific service of the University of Illinois.
Project Gutenberg is the brainchild of Michael Hart, who in 1971 decided that it would be a really good idea if lots of famous and important texts were freely available to everyone in the world. Since then, he has been joined by hundreds of volunteers who share his vision. Now, more than thirty years later, Project Gutenberg has the following figures (as of November 8th 2002): 203 New eBooks released during October 2002, 1975 New eBooks produced in 2002 (they were 1240 in 2001) for a total of 6267 Total Project Gutenberg eBooks. 119 eBooks have been posted so far by Project Gutenberg of Australia

The Song Book of Quong Lee
by Thomas Burke
Thomas Burke (1887-1945) was a very good writer of the Edwardian and post-war eras. He wrote widely, penning 30 books, most of them about London. He was orphaned as a baby and spent his first nine years in Poplar, a working-class London borough near to Limestone and the Thames River docks. He was fascinated from a young age with the life of the East End streets and gained as much education from them as from formal schooling. His books reflected this fascination, concentrating on the East End of London and in particular Limehouse, where he was best friends with an elderly Chinese man who later became the model for Quong Lee. Burke's most memorable creation is the old Chinese sage Quong Lee, who originally appeared in a series of short stories as part of Burke's "Limehouse" series. These were later collected into The Song Book of Quong Lee of Limehouse More Limehouse Nights (1921), and The Pleasantries of Old Quong All of Burke's work is currently out of print. To the best of my knowledge, The Song Book The Song Book is now in the public domain. Which is why I'm offering it here; not because I stand to make any money off of itI'm notbut because I have a great enjoyment for Burke's work and am loath to see it forgotten any more than it already is. So...enjoy.
