    Burnett, Frances Eliza Hodgson
(1849-1924), author Born in Cheetham Hill, Manchester, England, on November 24, 1849, Frances Hodgson grew up in increasingly straitened circumstances after the death of her father in 1854. In 1865 the family emigrated to the United States and settled in New Market, near Knoxville, Tennessee, where the promise of support from a maternal uncle failed to materialize. In 1868 Hodgson managed to place a story with Godey's Lady's Book . Within a few years she was being published regularly in Godey's, Peterson's Ladies' Magazine, Scribner's Monthly, and Harper's. In 1873, after a year's visit to England, she married Dr. Swan Moses Burnett of New Market (divorced 1898). Burnett's first novel, That Lass o' Lowrie's, which had been serialized in Scribner's, was published in 1877. Like her short stories, the book combined a remarkable gift for realistic detail in portraying scenes of working-class lifeunusual in that daywith a plot consisting of the most romantic and improbable of turns. After moving with her husband to Washington, D.C., Burnett wrote the novels Haworth's Louisiana A Fair Barbarian (1881), and

    FRANCES HODGSON BURNETT
    English author (1849-1924)
    Biography:
Frances Hodgson Burnett was born in Manchester in 1849. Some years after his farther's death, all her family moved to United States.
Her reputation as a novelist was made with her story of Lancashire life, That Lass o' Lowrie's (published in 1877), Burnett's first novel, which had been serialized in Scribner 's. The book already showed her talent to portray realistic working-class scenes, mixed with a romantic and most improvable plot. Later on, she had other novels published, like Haworth's Louisiana A Fair Barbarian (1881), and Through One Administration (1883), as well as a play, Esmeralda
But all these books were not to be her most successful work. In 1886, she published Little Lord Fauntleroy , a children's book which fascinated mothers, for they began dressing their sons in velvet suit with lace collar, like the main character of this book.
Her later books include Sara Crew (1888), later rewritten as A Little Princess for drama, and her marvelous Secret Garden (1909). Both were children's books, and thanks to them, Burnett is quite well-known now-a-days.

    The Secret Garden
    Author Info: Frances Hodgson Burnett
When Mary Lennox's parents die in India, she is shipped back to England to live on her uncle's estate, Misselthwaite Manor, in Yorkshire. The place is pretty much run by the dreadful Mrs. Medlock, while Mary's uncle travels compulsively. Lord Archibald Craven is trying to escape the memories that linger there, of his wife who died in childbirth. Mary is a sullen brat but she is largely ignored by Mrs. Medlock and so has time to explore the many nooks and crannies of the manor. She finds one room that looks just like her mother's didit is of course her aunt'sand there finds a large key. It turns out that the key fits the door of a secret garden, which Lady Craven tended and which is now kept locked and allowed to grow wild. Mary befriends young Dickon, whose sister is a housemaid, and together they explore the garden. One night Mary determines to find the source of a mysterious crying she's heard in the house, and when she eventually does she discovers her cousin, Colin, who survived his mother but is now sickly, crippled and confined to his room. He proves an even worse brat than she. Their mutual stubbornness though proves a boon as she refuses to accept Colin's self-pitying and rejects the idea that he's truly all that ill. She sets her mind to showing him the garden, convinced that just getting outside will do him good. Meanwhile, he threatens and commands the staff until they allow him out of the house. Their visits to the garden will in fact transform all of their lives in ways that will move even the most jaded reader. No wonder it is such a beloved classic.
