Robert Burns
Poet
Burns was born at Alloway near Ayr on 25th January 1759, the eldest of a family of seven born to William and Agnes Burnes . The Burnes family hailed from Kincardineshire, but William had moved south in the aftermath of the Jacobite rebellion, first to Edinburgh and then to Ayrshire where he was employed as a landscape gardener. In 1757 he married Agnes Brown whose family had lived in the Kirkoswald and Maybole district for generations. The future poet's earliest years were spent in the "auld cley biggin", the cottage which William Burnes had erected on a portion of the land which he had feued as a market garden, and it was here that he and his brother Gilbert received their brief formal education at the hands of John Murdoch . In 1765 the family moved to Mount Oliphant, a 70-acre farm two miles away. It was here, in the autumn of 1774, that Burns wrote his first song Handsome Nell as a tribute to the girl with whom he was partnered at harvest-time. With the exception of the Tragic fragment (in blank verse), all of Burns's early compositions were lyrics set to well-known melodies of the period, and song writing was to be his principal metier till the end of his life.

Then, horn for horn they stretch an' strive, Deil take the hindmost! on they drive, Till a' their weel-swall'd kytes belyve are bent like drums; Then auld guidman, maist like to rive, Bethankit hums. Robert Burns (1759-1796)
At a time when the glories of English literature were being made known to a wide audience in Europe, due to its new direction in which the lives of common folk were being explored and praised, the name of Robert Burns stands out. Burns was above all the poet of rural, daily life. Not only that, but his championing of the Scottish vernacular made that language an acceptable vehicle in which to produce world class literature. He used the rhythm and sounds of his native Scots to give full meaning to his work as well as liveliness and spirit. In addition, the patriotism expressed in many of his works did much to keep alive the spirit of an independent-minded Scotland, and the present-day ceremonies of toasting the haggis carried out world-wide by Scots loyal to their native country owes everything to one of his poems.
Born at Alloway, Ayrshire, Burns was heavily influenced by Blind Harry's Wallace and the works of Allan Ramsay and Robert Fergusson. His first collection of verses was published in 1786: Poems Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect, in which his ode "To a Mouse" first appeared. Its success made him change his mind about leaving his poor farm near Mauchline and t taking his family to emigrate to Jamaica. It was a book that brought him instant fame from a literature-starved public; the era of the common man was at hand (just think what was happening in the American colonies and in France at the same time).

My younger brother was also born on January 25th (coincidentally he is also named Robert) and he shares this Aquarian birthday with a man who lived a life of traveling and writing songs and verse expressive of his love for the natural world. Aquarius is a sign known to be unique; the sign of one who marches to a different drummer. Burns' unusual lifestyle, his long walks in the countryside which inspired his romantic writing, was surely the model of the perfect Aquarian. Burns, a prolific poet, worked at a vocation many today might envy: he was an inspector of whisky distilleries. Sadly, this job may have helped hasten his death at the untimely age of 37. Riding many miles on horseback in harsh Scottish weather, Burns contracted pneumonia and was advised to take what was then a popular treatment: "the ocean cure." It was believed swimming in the ocean would heal those sick with lung complaints. But sadly, Burns' condition worsened and he died, leaving behind a legacy of wonderful songs and poems which surely would have been richer and fuller had he lived longer.

Administrative / Biographical History
Robert Burns was born in Alloway, Aryshire on 25 January 1759. From 1765 to 1768 Burns was educated at an 'adventure' school by his father, neighbours and a teacher, John Murdoch. In 1775 he attended a mathematics school in Kirkswald. Burns spent his youth working on his father's tenant farm and by the age of 15 he was the principle worker on the farm. At this early age Burns began to write poetry about aspects of Scottish life. On the death of his father in 1784, Robert and his brother became partners in the farm. Robert abandoned farming in 1785 to concentrate on writing poetry. He published his first collection of poems, Poems Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect - Kilmarnock Edition , in 1786. Burns moved to Edinburgh where he won critical acclaim for his poetry amongst the Edinburgh literati. In 1787 he was sponsored by the Caledonian Hunt to publish a new edition of his poems. He left Edinburgh in 1788 for Ellisfarm near Dumfries to begin farming once again. However he continued to write poetry. In 1789 Burns began working for the Excise in Dumfries and in 1791 he left the farm to live and work in the town. Burns died in Dumfries from heart disease on 21 July 1796.

O Mary, at thy window be! It is the wish'd, the trysted hour. Those smiles and glances let me see, That make the miser's treasure poor. How blithely wad I bide the stoure, A weary slave frae sun to sun, Could I the rich reward secure The lovely Mary Morison. Yestreen, when to the trembling string The dance gaed thro' the lighted ha', To thee my fancy took its wing, I sat, but neither heard nor saw: Tho' this was fair, and that was braw, And yon the toast of a' the town, I sigh'd and sang amang them a': 'Ye are not Mary Morison!' O, Mary canst thou wreck his peace Wha for thy sake wad gladly die? Or canst thou break that heart of his Whase only faut is loving thee? If love for love thou wilt na gie, At least be pity to me shown: A thought ungentle canna be The thought o' Mary Morison. Auld Lang Syne Robert Burns (1759-1796) Chorus:
For auld lang syne, my dear, For auld lang syne, We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet For auld lang syne!

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne?
And surely ye'll be your pint-stowp,
And surely I'll be mine, And we'll tak a cup o' kindness yet For auld lang syne! We twa hae run about the braes, And pou'd the gowans fine, But we've wander'd monie a weary fit Sin' auld lang syne. We twa hae paidl'd in the burn Frae morning sun till dine, But seas between us braid hae roar'd Sin' auld lang syne. And there's a hand, my trusty fiere, And gie's a hand o' thine, And we'll tak a rightguid-willie waught For auld lang syne! Old un moi besinn'n Robert Burns (1759-1796) Refreng:
Up old un moi besinn'n, miin fruend, Up old un moi besinn'n, Drink noch ein beker leiv' mit mii Up old un moi besinn'n!
Schull'n olde fruend'n fergeten war'n, Ferswunden uut 't besinn'n?
