Robert was born on 25 January 1759, in Alloway , Scotland, the eldest of seven children. His father, William Burnes , was a gardener/farmer who seemed to have awfully bad business sense. The family lived in poverty until 1766, when William rented a farm. The family then lived in even worse poverty . Robert got very little education, since he so often had to help with the heavy work of farming, but he read a great deal, and that made up for a lot. He wrote his first poem, "O Once I Loved," in 1774, and after that there was no stopping him. Things got financially better for the family in 1777, after they moved to a different farm, and Robert was able to read and write even more. In 1781, Robert went to the nearby town of Irvine and started a business , which was a colossal failure. While there, though, he met a sailor named Richard Brown who read Robert's poetry and encouraged him to publish it. Robert agreed, mainly because he had hopes that the royalties would pay his way to Jamaica, where he hoped to make his fortune . The book, printed in 1786, was so successful that Robert decided he could make his fortune right where he was

Burns, Robert (1759-1796) Schottischer Schriftsteller.

When chill November's surly blast
Made fields and forests bare,
One evening, as I wandered forth, Along the bank of Ayr, I spied a man, whose aged step Seemed weary, worn with care; His face was furrowed o'er with years, And hoary was his hair. "Young stranger, whither wanderest thou?" Began the reverend sage; "Does thirst of wealth thy step constrain, Or youthful pleasure's rage? Or haply, prest with cares and woes, Too soon thou has began To wander forth, with me, to mourn

ROBERT BURNS (1759-1796)
Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect . Kilmarnock: John Wilson, 1786. Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet, is also undoubtedly Scotland's greatest national cult hero. Burns' great appeal lies in his humble origins and hard "ploughman's" life, and in his rustic, unpretentious verse that is so characteristic of Scottish folk tradition. His great fame rests almost entirely on Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect After a break in his long relationship with Jean Armour, Burns decided to make a fresh start by emigrating to Jamaica. Burns' close friend, Gavin Hamilton, advised him to publish a volume of his poems to pay for his passage. The result was Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect , published on July 31, 1786 in the town of Kilmarnocka collection of thirty-six poems carefully selected to impress a sophisticated Edinburgh audience. His efforts went beyond his intentions, charming not only the Edinburgh critics, but also the Scottish rural folk, and every generation of Scot since. The ship left for Jamaica without him, and instead Burns journeyed straight to Edinburgh to meet the fortune reaped from his volume's great success. This copy of the first edition is from the collection of Duncan McNaught, editor of the

Robert Burns
Poet
Burns was born at Alloway near Ayr on 25th January 1759, the eldest of a family of seven born to William and Agnes Burnes. The Burnes family hailed from Kincardineshire, but William had moved south in the aftermath of the Jacobite rebellion, first to Edinburgh and then to Ayrshire where he was employed as a landscape gardener. In 1757 he married Agnes Brown whose family had lived in the Kirkoswald and Maybole district for generations. The future poet's earliest years were spent in the "auld cley biggin", the cottage which William Burnes had erected on a portion of the land which he had feued as a market garden, and it was here that he and his brother Gilbert received their brief formal education at the hands of John Murdoch. In 1765 the family moved to Mount Oliphant, a 70-acre farm two miles away. It was here, in the autumn of 1774, that Burns wrote his first song Handsome Nell as a tribute to the girl with whom he was partnered at harvest-time. With the exception of the

Burns suppers consist of having a meal of tatties (mashed potatoes), neeps (turnips - not swede!) and haggis. There is usually quite a bit of whisky drunk at these occasions too, (Burns was a well known drinker and womaniser). A Lad (man) addresses the haggis and makes a speech remembering Burns and how his thoughts and poems are timeless and as relevant today as they were when they were written. There is a "reply from the lassies" where it's usual to point out the other side of Burns and how he left many women broken hearted. Well, that's the general idea anyway, there's lots of variations. A "ceilidh dance" Is oteh held after the meal: the primary purpose of ceilidh dance is the enjoyment of the dance, it different from formal Scottish Country Dancing. Ceilidh (pronounced "Kay-lay", emphasis on 1st syllable) . Derives from the Gaelic word meaning a visit and originally meant just that (and still does in Gaelic). It can also mean a house party, a concert or more usually an evening of informal Scottish traditional dancing to informal music. Ceilidhs in the lowlands tend to be dances, in the highlands they tend to be concerts. Dances in the Highlands and traditional ceilidhs in the Lowlands are often called "ceilidh dances". Ceilidh dancing is fundamentally different from Scottish Country Dancing in that it is much less formal and the primary purpose is the enjoyment of doing the dance. Scottish Country Dancing is much more oriented towards being a demonstration or exhibition. Ceilidhs are extremely popular indeed with young people and often attract from a few dozen people to several hundred.

Painting of Robert Burns (1759-1796)
By Alexander Nasmyth, 1787
Robert Burns (1759-1796) was born in Alloway in Ayrshire, the son of a farmer who provided him with an excellent education. On the death of his father in 1784, Burns tried his hand at farming, but met with little success. While Burns considered emigration, he wrote a number of his finest poems: The Twa Dogs, The Cotter's Saturday Night, and To a Mouse all date from 1785. He hoped that by publishing his work, in the now famous Kilmarnock edition of his poems (1786), he would raise the money to establish himself in Jamaica. But such was the success of the edition that he decided to remain in Scotland and he was lionised by Edinburgh society. It was while Burns was in Edinburgh that Alexander Nasmyth painted this portrait, now the most famous image of the poet. Introduced to each other by their mutual acquaintance and patron, Patrick Miller of Dalswinton, Burns and Nasmyth became good friends. The portrait was commissioned by the publisher William Creech, to be engraved for a new edition of Burns' poems. Apparently Nasmyth never quite completed the portrait, preferring to leave it unfinished rather than take the risk of losing his likeness. The poetry of Robert Burns, both in Scots and English, has become an important part of Scottish national identity. His personality - democratic and generous - has also become an ideal for many Scots.

Robert Burns
Robert Burns was born at Alloway, near Ayr, on January 25, 1759. His father William was a gardener to the Provost of Ayr. Robert was educated briefly at John Murdoch's school in Alloway and later in Ayr. Family financial worries forced Burns to work as a farm labourer, and it was while thus occupied that he met his first love, Nelly Kirkpatrick. Robert Burns Honoured
In January a Burns’ Night was organised to honour the life and work of Robert Burns (1759-1796) In a speech some views were given on what it was that endeared Robert Burns to so many people both in Scotland and throughout the world, so much so that he is known as the People’s Poet. The speaker pointed out that Burns is celebrated not just for his poetry but for the sort of person he was and the positions he took culturally and politically in the context of his time. Burns wrote about the things that are close to people’s hearts: love, friendship, joy in nature, the pain of emigration, love of one’s country and language amongst them. Some of his songs have endured through the centuries and are frequently sung today, e.g. "My Love Is Like a Red, Red Rose", "Afton Water", "Ae Fond Kiss" and of course that internationally famous song of friendship, "Auld Lang Syne". As well as a recognition of his own and others’ failings, an intense love of his fellow human beings shines through Burns’s poetry. One of his poems, "The Slave’s Lament", (also written as a song) reveals Burns’s sentiments for people taken from their native land: "It was in sweet Senegal that my foes did me enthrall

Street Bakersfield, California. Starting at 6 PM... The National Poet of Scotland and a poet of people everywhere... ROBERT BURNS was born at Allowy, in Ayrshire, Scotland, the 25th of January, 1759. Raised on a farm of modest means, he endured a childhood of hard work and responsibility, the family often struggling to provide enough food. However, his father insisted that Robert receive a good education. Burns became a fine writer and keen observer of human behavior. He grew to have a profound respect for both pepole and nature. He was also a passionate, romantic man who greatly enjoyed good times with friends. He loved the ladies, and they him, leading to relationships that caused him to write some of the most beautiful love poems ever set to paper. Burns cultivated a broad sense of humor and was a master of satire. He wrote of things familiar to all people and championed the solid, simple virtues of life. For this, he has been called "the universal poet," and "the poet of the common man." His first book of poems was published in 1786 and brought him instant fame. He married and raised a family, but only ten years latter, in 1796, he died at the age of 37, of a heart condition related to the harsh conditions of his childhood.

Surviving copies of this "Kilmarnock Edition" are now worth many thousands of pounds. After the publication of his second collection he moved to a farm in Ellisland near Dumfries with his new wife, Jean Armour. However after his crops failed and with a new baby to care for Burns reluctantly took a job as an exciseman.
