    Burroughs, Edgar Rice (1875-1950)
American popular fiction writer, best remembered as the creator of Tarzan, who also wrote a series of adventure stories set on Mars (known to its natives as "Barsoom"). Published between 1917 and 1948, these ten novels, among the best of which were A Princess of Mars The Chessmen of Mars (1922), and Swords of Mars (1936), saw hero John Carter encountering a variety of alien-looking but human-acting creatures on a world extrapolated from the Mars of Percival Lowell . Though lightweight in content, and superficial in their portrayal of alien life and intelligence, they nevertheless had a lasting effect on those who read them in their formative years, including, by their own acknowledgment, Ronald Bracewell , Ray Bradbury , Arthur C. Clarke , and Carl Sagan . Moreover, they helped entrench the popular notion, especially in the United States, that Mars was still a place of mystery and, possibly, the abode of beings more advanced than ourselves. It was, after all, during the time when Burroughs wrote his Martian adventures that the War of the Worlds radio play triggered such mass panic across America. See

    Edgar Rice Burroughs
(1875-1950) started his writing career out of sheer desperation. With a family to feed and numerous job failures he was frequently forced to pawn personal items. He began writing down his daydreams and from this evolved his first manuscript Under the Moons of Mars (later published as A Princess of Mars ) which earned him $400, an amazing sum of money at the time. Burroughs often dreamed of escaping his responsibilities and living as a "noble savage." Perhaps this was the inspiration for Tarzan, the story of an English boy raised by apes. Burroughs spent 6 months in 1911 writing Tarzan and made $700. Fans immediately began clamoring for more. Burroughs quickly became "the king of the pulps." Money and recognition began rolling in. His third installment of The Return of Tarzan featured an N.C. Wyeth cover. By September of 1913, Burroughs was supporting his family of five solely by his writing. The Tarzan empire caught the attention of Hollywood, and the first of many successful Tarzan features was produced in 1918. Burroughs was less than pleased with the film result. The screen Tarzan, with his language of grunts and gestures, bore little resemblance to Burroughs' Lord Greystoke, who was fluent in English and French by the end of the first book. Despite Burroughs' distaste (he declined to attend the film's premiere)

    PELLUCIDAR
By Edgar Rice Burroughs. Illustrated by J. Allen St. John. YOUR PRICE: $12.99
Book Two of the Pellucidar series. More than 90 years ago, Burroughs (1875-1950) began publishing his short fiction in All Story Weekly, beginning a new direction in science fiction and fantasy storytelling, and influencing a host of authors that followed. These stories were later collected into books, from which we get his Tarzan, John Carter of Mars and Pellucidar series. These new editions are faithful reproductions of those original hardcover editions from 1917-23 by A.C. McClurg, including the front dustjacket artwork and all interior illustrations.
David Innes had left Perry to return to the surface, but he's now determined to go back to the Earth's core, taking with him the knowledge of the surface world. He also wants to find Dian the Beautiful, the jungle maiden he met on his first trip there.
Includes four illustrations by St. John and Burroughs's map depicting the interior world. Quiet Vision, 2001.
