John Burroughs (18371921). Author Sarracino, Carmine. Print Source JRLeMaster and Donald D. Kummings, eds., Walt Whitman An Encyclopedia

John Burroughs Author: Sarracino, Carmine Print Source: J.R. LeMaster and Donald D. Kummings, eds., Walt Whitman: An Encyclopedia, (New York: Garland Publishing, 1998), reproduced by permission. John Burroughs first met Whitman in 1864, while Burroughs was in Washington, D.C., looking for work. After his marriage to Ursula North in 1857, Burroughs foundered financially. Against the wishes of his conventional wife, who had grown up in affluence as the daughter of a prosperous New York farmer, Burroughs hoped to become a writer, thus his interest in Walt Whitman. In 1862 he had frequently visited Pfaff’s beer cellar, a bohemian watering hole and the center of literary life in Manhattan. There Burroughs championed Whitman in literary arguments, anticipating at every moment a meeting with the poet himself. That meeting did not take place at Pfaff’s, but rather by chance on the streets of Washington, D.C., as Whitman made his way to an army hospital to tend wounded soldiers. Always trying to recruit fresh help, Whitman invited Burroughs to come along. In an earlier desperate attempt at employment, Burroughs had briefly worked on a crew that buried Union soldiers whose bodies were transported to Washington. Nursing the horribly wounded was as repugnant to Burroughs as handling mangled corpses, and he soon left his job in the hospitals. But Burroughs and Whitman, who quickly began calling him "Jack," had struck up an enduring friendship.

An American Naturalist
Edward J. Renehan, Jr.
The first full biography of the dean of American nature writers to be published since 1925.
"[Renehan reveals] a far more complex and interesting man than other biographers have described. ... In this thoughtful biography we are shown the once sainted 'Sage of Slabsides' as a flesh-and-blood traveler in a now-vanished world." The Sunday New York Times Book Review
John Burroughs (1837-1921) emerged from an obscure boyhood in the Catskill Mountains to write more than thirty books, create the genre of the nature essay, and become the preeminent nature writer of his day. In this critically-acclaimed biography, Edward J. Renehan, Jr. draws on a wealth of previously unpublished manuscripts, journals and letters to portray the man Henry James called "a more humorous, more available and more sociable Thoreau." In the process, Renehan reveals Burroughs's complex and enduring relationships with such notables as Jay Gould, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Thomas Edison, John Muir, Walt Whitman, Theodore Roosevelt and Henry Ford.
"Renehan's biography does precisely what it sets out to do: it provides the thorough, responsible, readable biography which has so long been wanting in Burroughs scholarship."

    ESE ES UN AMIGO
    JOHN BURROUGHS (1837-1921)
    Aquel cuyo apretón de manos es un poquito más firme,
    Aquel cuya sonrisa es un poquito mas luminosa,
    Aquel cuyos actos son un poquito mas diáfanos;
    Ese es a quien yo llamo un amigo.
    Aquel quien mas pronto da que pide,
    Aquel quien es el mismo hoy y mañana,
    Aquel quien compartirá tu pena igual que tu alegría;
    Ese es a quien yo llamo un amigo.
    Aquel cuyos pensamientos son un poquito mas puros, Aquel cuya mente es un poquito más aguda, Aquel quien evita lo que es sórdido y mísero; Ese es a quien yo llamo un amigo. Aquel quien, cuando te vas, te extraña con tristeza, Aquel quien, a tu retorno, te recibe con alegría; Aquel cuya irritación jamás se deja notar; Ese es a quien yo llamo un amigo. Aquel quien siempre está dispuesto a ayudar, Aquel cuyos consejos siempre fueron buenos, Aquel quien no teme defenderte cuando te atacan; Ese es a quien yo llamo un amigo. Aquel quien es risueño cuando todo parece adverso, Aquel cuyos ideales nunca has olvidado

    Burroughs, John 1837-1921, American naturalist and author, b. Roxbury, N.Y.; son of a farmer. He was a journalist, a treasury clerk in Washington, and a bank examiner, before settling in 1874 on a farm near Esopus, N.Y. There he studied fruit culture and literature. His first book, Walt Whitman, Poet and Person (1867), was the first to adequately recognize the genius of his poet friend. His prose made widely popular the type of nature essay written by Thoreau. His best-known books are Wake Robin Locusts and Wild Honey Fresh Fields, a travel book (1884); Signs and Seasons (1886); and a volume of poems, Bird and Bough (1906). A growing interest in philosophy and in science is evident in Time and Change The Summit of the Years The Breath of Life (1915), and Accepting the Universe See his autobiography, My Boyhood (1922); biographies by Elizabeth Burroughs Kelley (1959) and P. G. Westbrook (1974).

    WAITING by: John Burroughs (1837-1921)
      ERENE, I fold my hands and wait,
      Nor care for wind, nor tide, nor sea;
      I rave no more 'gainst time or fate,
      For, lo! my own shall come to me.
      I stay my haste, I make delays,
      For what avails this eager pace?
      I stand amid the eternal ways,
      And what is mine shall know my face.
      Asleep, awake, by night or day,
      The friends I seek are seeking me;
      No wind can drive my bark astray,
      Nor change the tide of destiny.
      What matter if I stand alone?
      I wait with joy the coming years;
      My heart shall reap where it hath sown,
      And garner up its fruit of tears.
      The waters know their own and draw
      The brook that springs in yonder height;
      So flows the good with equal law
      Unto the soul of pure delight.
      The stars come nightly to the sky;
      The tidal wave unto the sea;
      Nor time, nor space, nor deep, nor high,
      Can keep my own away from me.
    "Waiting" is reprinted from The Little Book of American Poets: 1787-1900 . Ed. Jessie B. Rittenhouse. Cambridge: Riverside Press, 1915. MORE POEMS BY JOHN BURROUGHS RELATED LINKS
