    Literary Critics.
In the field of literary criticism the work of Edwin Percy Whipple (1819-1886) was notable. He was the author of several volumes of scholarly essays including Literature and Life Literature of the Age of Elizabeth (1869), and American Literature, and Other Papers (1887). Horace E. Scudder (1838-1902), long associated with the publication of the Atlantic Monthly , he succeeded Aldrich as its editor in 1890, was an indefatigable writer, the extent of whose service to American letters is hardly understood, since much of his work was anonymous. Henry N. Hudson Richard Grant White William James Rolfe (1827-1910), and Horace Howard Furness (1833-1912) are to be remembered for their services in the criticism and interpretation of Shakespeare's dramas. Their scholarly editions of the plays are among the best that have been produced. The name of William Winter (1836-1917), author of Shakespeare's England (1886) and our foremost critic of the stage, may be mentioned in this connection. Personal Literary Recollections appeared in 1909.

    Twain, Mark, 1835-1910
The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg and Other Stories and Essays
Shadowed by domestic tragedy and the looming threat of bankruptcy, the ebullient humorist Mark Twain emerged as a dark satirist in the mid-1890's. Twain spoke briefly of "the damned human race." His close friend William Dean Howells wrote that this was a period in his life when the "night was blackest." The Man that Corrupted Hadleyburg is a morality tale of somber dimensions. It has been called Twain's greatest short story. According to Van Wyck Brooks, "Not till then ... did he ever again openly and on a large scale attack the spiritual integrity of industrial America." After his death, Howells wrote that Twain "was sole, incomparable, the Lincoln of our literature."
    Howells, William Dean, 1837-1920
Literary Friends and Acquaintence: a Personal Retrospective of American Authorship.
William Dean Howells was a giant figure in nineteenth-century American letters. The inspired and powerful editor of the Atlantic Monthly from 1871 to 1881, Howells champiohned writers such as Bret Harte, Mark Twain, Henry James and George Eliot. For more than forty years he expanded the nation's literary horizons. A staunch advocate of realism in fiction, he wrote 36 novels, including The Rise of Silas Lapham.

    53. JOHN BURROUGHS AND THE PLACE OF NATURE
wilderness and landscape can be directly applied to the two most prominent naturewriters of the period, John Muir (18381914) and John Burroughs (1837-1921).
    http://home.wlu.edu/~warrenj/pastoral.htm
AMERICAN PASTORALISM, 1865-1920: BURROUGHS, MUIR, AND THE PLACE OF NATURE Introduction American Pastoralism will be a tightly organized book of six chapters, totaling some 90,000 words, which will map the landscape of American pastoralism between the end of the Civil War and the end of World War I. In this project, I argue that the period between 1865 and 1920 can shed considerable light on the place of nature both in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and in our present critical situation. The literature of ecocriticism focuses on environmental writing and the relationship between nature and culture, and the field has grown steadily over the past twenty years. A bibliography of major works would run several pages, but it would certainly include Leo Marx’s Machine in the Garden and Lawrence Buell’s The Environmental Imagination . One of the major aims of my project is to lay down the coordinates of the American pastoral and to suggest how I map the literary and cultural landscape of pastoralism during the crucial period of industrialization and urbanization after the Civil War, a period that in my view delivered the United States into modernity. A recent, excellent example of such a map occurs in Don Scheese’s Nature Writing: The Pastoral Impulse in America (Twayne 1996). Using the work of landscape historian John Brinckerhoff Jackson, Scheese distinguishes between

    JOHN MUIR AND FRIENDS
    by Cliff Anderson
It seems clear that the modest and reserved personality of John Muir was the complete opposite of Teddy Roosevelt, yet here they are in 1903, standing together atop Yosemite looking at Glacier Point. Doesn't it seem likely that TR stage managed that photo, making sure that he was the one next to the edge and posing fist on hip? Could Muir be chuckling to himself, biting his tongue from making some caustic remark, or maybe just indulging the President, since he was assured of TR's tremendous influence and assistance to the cause? Muir looks uncomfortable, as if he was dragooned into posing for anything, let alone with the boisterous President. Muir might have been galled by the basic difference between their personalities. Muir captured animals on his sketchpad, while the braggadocious big game hunting Roosevelt hung their trophy heads in his den (over 250 heads from his 1910 trip alone!).
Yet both Muir and Roosevelt were key factors in the national park initiative and momentum, starting with Yosemite, and the resultant conservation and wilderness preservation efforts.

    Go Take A Hike!
According to Webster, a "naturalist" is "a student of animals or plants, especially in the field." With these simple qualifications, you can easily become a naturalist too. Take a hike. While you go on your "nature walk" be a naturalist by "studying" the many lifeforms, both animals and plants, that you see in your "field." The best place to be a naturalist, of course, is outdoors. So, you need to turn off your computer and go take a hike! Later, come back and visit these websites dedicated to the naturalist in all of us. Compare your own experiences. Rachel Carson
"Rachel Carson changed the world, come see how the world changed Rachel Carson" invites this website dedicated to the work of this woman, widely considered the originator of the modern environmental movement. Mary Morris Vaux Walcott
Known as the "Society Lady in Hobnailed Boots," Mary Walcott left her role in Philadelphia society to "take a hike" in the Canadian Alps. Her pioneering love of nature is an inspiration to modern day environmentalists. The Life of Henry David Thoreau
    Reflections on Walden

When we think of naturalists, Thoreau immediately comes to mind. He is perhaps the most famous of all naturalists, known especially for his "hikes" near Walden Pond.

This directory is an index of indexes. It contains pointers to individual author guides or other cumulative documents that deal with specific writers. Admittedly, most of these authors are "literary." I have not included many authors from genres such as science fiction or romance. I think other sources do a better job of that than I can. As with everything on the Web, many of these guides are ephemeral; they disappear from the Web almost as soon as they appear. If you encounter a bad connection in this guide, please let me know about it. Another point: this page is NOT a catalog of every single text available on the net. Return to the Literature Webliography page and search the various text archives or use a web search engine for a more complete listing of titles available on the net. ED KANZE PRESENTS "A WAY OF LIFE" Author, photographer and naturalist, Edward Kanze will present "A Way of Life" about conservationist John Burroughs in the fourth in a series of "Nature for the New Millennium" programs sponsored by the Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks. The program will be held Wednesday, April 25, 7 p.m. at Maddox Hall, 179 Demars Blvd. in Tupper Lake, NY.
Kanze will present a slide show and talk about the enormous role John Burroughs played in promoting conservation in the 19th century, a role that led directly to Theodore Roosevelt's interest in nature and conservation and indirectly to conservation efforts in the Adirondacks. Burroughs also played a major role in the nature study movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was a naturalist, philosopher and essayist who lived from 1837-1921. The subject
