Sir Samuel White Baker Sir Richard Francis Burton Mary Henrietta Kingsley Mungo Park Sir Samuel White Baker Sir Samuel White Baker (1821-1893), was an English explorer of Africa. He became known as an expert on Egypt and Sudan chiefly through his two books, The Albert N'yanza, Great Basin of the Nile (1866) and The Nile Tributaries of Abyssinia (1867). He also wrote popular books on hunting and nature. Baker was born in London. During the late 1850's and early 1860's, he and Florence von Sass, whom he later married, explored the region of the White Nile, the Blue Nile, and the Atbara River in Africa. On March 14, 1864, Baker and his party found a great lake. The lake, which he named Albert Nyanza (now also called Lake Albert), lies between Uganda and Congo (Kinshasa) and is an important source of the Nile River. Baker was knighted in 1866. In 1869, Ismail Pasha, the ruler of Egypt, appointed him as governor general of Sudan, which was then controlled by Egypt. Ismail told Baker to eliminate the slave trade. Baker added new territory in Sudan for Egypt and defeated some prominent slave traders but failed to stop the slave trade. He returned to England in 1873.

The Life Story of Sir. Burton Burton, Sir Richard Francis (1821-1890), British explorer, linguist, and student of Asian cultures, one of the most famous mid-19th century European explorers of Africa. He is also known for his definitive translation of stories known under the title Arabian Nights and for his valuable travel literature on western Asia, Africa, and South America. Burton was born in Torquay, England, to an English army officer and his wealthy wife, the latter rumored to be descended from the French Bourbon kings. He was reared in France, England, and Italy and educated haphazardly along the way by tutors until he entered Trinity College, University of Oxford, in 1840. A headstrong young man, Burton preferred to study subjects that interested him-such as Arabic, philosophy, and mysticism-rather than the subjects in the standard curriculum. He was expelled from Oxford in 1842. II.TRAVELS IN ASIA AND ARABIA Deeply interested in Asian life and languages, Burton joined the army of the English East India Company in 1842 and served in Sind (what is now southern Pakistan) for seven years. During this time he traveled in Pakistan and western India, mixed with local people (sometimes passing as Asian in bazaars), and became increasingly familiar with local customs and proficient in several local languages as well as Persian and Arabic. These experiences set the stage for Burton’s pilgrimage to the Islamic holy city of Mecca in 1853, which he made in the disguise of an Afghan physician. Burton became one of the first non-Muslims to enter Mecca. He sketched the central shrine, the Kaaba, and participated in all the rituals associated with the pilgrimage without being detected. These travels-which Burton described vividly in Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to El-Medinah and Meccah (1855)-brought him fame throughout Europe.

Sir Richard Francis Burton A fencer in college, I became interested in the history of the sport, and in my research I discovered a man reputed to be one of the greatest fencers of the 19th century: Sir Richard Francis Burton . In subsequent reading I discovered, in my opinion, the most fascinating person of that or any other century. His swordsmanship was incidental; Burton was foremost an explorer, Orientalist, anthropologist, linguist, translator, author, and scholar. He was a man of immense learning and erudition and possessed remarkable physical charisma. It was written he had dark, "questing panther eyes" (that he used at times to hypnotize women) and a physique like a prize fighter, with broad shoulders and a deep-chested, often sardonic, sometimes sad laugh. The Arabian Nights' Entertainments or the Book of a Thousand Nights and a Night Author Info: Sir Richard Francis Burton I've mentioned previously my fascination with the great explorer, author, ethnographer, translator, etc., Richard Francis Burton [see Orrin's review of To Your Scattered Bodies Go Philip Jose Farmer (Grade: B+) ], but I had never actually gotten around to reading his translation of the Arabian Nights . I don't think I'd ever even comprehended the framing device that gives the book its name until I read John Barth's Chimera , a modern riff on the ancient tales. Heck, I think all I really knew of the Tales was the same as most American kids: (1) the really cheesy Sinbad cartoon, where cinching his belt gave him extraordinary powers; (2) the even cheesier Ray Harryhausen stop-action films like Golden Voyage of Sinbad ; (3) and, I suppose I Dream of Jeannie seemed to be related to the stories somehow. But upon reading the stories, they turn out to be great fun and the set up is quite ingenious. King Shahryar and his brother are both cuckolded by their wiveswhom they slice and dice along with their "blackamoor" lovers. Already prey to understandable doubts about the fidelity of women, they set out to find a man less fortunate than themselves:

It was compiled by the Indian sage Vatsyayana sometime between the second and fourth centuries A.C.E. His work was based on earlier Kama Shastras or "Rules of Love" going back to at least the seventh century B.C.E., and is a compendium of the social norms and love-customs of patriarchal Northern India around the time he lived. Vatsyayana's Kama Sutra is valuable today for his psychological insights into the interactions and scenarios of love, and for his structured approach to the many diverse situations he describes. He defines different types of men and women, matching what he terms "equal" unions, and gives detailed descriptions of many love-postures.
