This 5 page paper asks whether we have created the concept of God as a means of rationalizing and dealing with death. It explores the philosophy of Leibniz and the research findings that led Francis Crick to abandon his hypothesis that the origin of life from some grand primordial soup is valid. Failing all else, we can give up and believe that the universe originated at the hand of an intelligent and benevolent Creator. Plato’s belief that a single soul occupies many bodies gives us a basis for the ongoing nature of the soul. It is not necessary to create a God for the same purpose. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Joseph Butler: Sermons Major Tenets of His Position: The following selection is from Baraclow, Moral Philosophy: Theory and Issues According to the British philosopher and theologian Joseph Butler (1692-1752), self-interest is only one of many possible motives for action. Mankind has various instincts and principles of action . . .; some leading most directly and immediately to the good of the community, and some most directly to private good. . . . [I]t is not a true representation of mankind, to affirm that they are wholly governed by self-love, the love of power and sensual appetites: . . . it is manifest fact, that the same persons, the generality, are frequently influenced by friendship, compassion, gratitude; and even a general abhorrence of what is base, and liking of what is fair and just, takes its turn amongst the other motives of action. According to Butler, people can be motivated solely by self-interest, but they can also be motivated by friendship compassion, gratitude, and a desire to do the right thing. If they act in order to benefit or protect someone out of friendship or compassion, they are not acting out of self-interest.

    http://www.siue.edu/~whamric/Butler.html
Bishop Joseph Butler (1692-1752): A Brief Introduction Butler's writings are part of a 17th and 18th century effort to find a foundation for morals in something other than appeals to divine will. Butler sought it in nature, particularly human nature. He inherited from the previous century the view of (what we call) psychological egoism found in the writings of Hobbes and his French contemporary, Bernard Mandeville. He also inherited a tradition referred to today as "the British Moralists" who argued for a benevolent picture of human nature. His method is to try to show that self-interest and benevolence are only parts of a larger whole. For Butler, who claims to base his views on the vast bulk of humankind (!), human beings are neither exceptionally self-regarding to the exclusion of benevolence nor exceptionally benevolent to the exclusion of self-interest. What is more, he finds that these motives are not necessarily incompatible and may even reinforce each other. David Hume, in An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals , put the same idea this way: ""[T]here is some benevolence, however small, infused into our bosom; some spark of friendship for humankind; some particle of the dove kneaded into our frame, along with the elements of the wolf and serpent."

Why Social Engineers Are Invariably Dangerously Wrong
A Warning From Joseph Butler (1692-1752) The following is from " The Eighteenth Century Background " by Basil Willey (1940), the chapter entitled ' Butler As A Moralist Three Sermons p 99 by Joseph Butler Why is the 'greatest happiness' principle (which for good utilitarians comprised the whole of the law and the prophets) a terrible mistake? Because, in Butler's view, we simply do not possess, in our present imperfect state, sufficient clairvoyance for us to be certain about the consequences of our actions, 'nor do we know what we are about, when we endeavour to promote the good of mankind in any ways but those he [God] has directed'. Shocking actions might be performed with a view to producing an overbalance of happiness. Such ultimate objectives as the happiness of mankind are beyond our limited scope, and we may easily, in attempting to pursue them, become moral monsters. Our safety lies in following the God-given instinct which condemns violence, injustice, and falsehood, and approves benevolence towards some (e.g. kindred, friends, or countrymen) rather than towards others; whereas with the more grandiose aims we may easily be led into perpetrating the former, and neglecting the latter. 'The happiness of the world', he concludes, 'is the concern of him who is the Lord and the proprietor of it'; our concern is only with conduct dictated by the sense of duty. Or as Dr Broad expresses it: God might be conceived to be a utilitarian 'were his moral character merely that of benevolence; yet ours is not so'. 'And though it is of course our duty,' Butler adds
