Other information says that the Campbells were in Nova Scotia 1840-60's; some in Woodstock, Ontario then to KS in 1871. Murdock's immigration date in 1867, per the 1920 census, confirms the prior information.

71F6 Three Moralists: Butler, Mill and Nietzsche Spring 2000 The unit will examine central themes in the work of three major historical figures: Joseph Butler (1692-1752), J. S. Mill (1806-1873) and Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900). These very different figures represent important, but often neglected, strands in moral philosophy and in philosophical thinking about human nature. adapted to virtue, having been designed by a benevolent God. Mill agrees that virtue involves regard for the common good and restraint, but aims to make his moral philosophy independent of any theology. He is critical of some ways in which the idea of nature has figured in philosophical thinking about morality. Yet he shares with Butler a preoccupation with whether we are up to being virtuous and develops a view on this matter. Nietzsche is contemptuous of traditional thinking about virtue. He thinks that traditional values are, in an important sense, unnatural. He offers a diagnosis of why they have been regarded as values, which is not at all flattering to Christian tradition. The unit will explore some ways in which these themes are worked out. It is, obviously, in part historical and so will require close reading of texts by historical figures. It is also analytical in that it will require engagement with the general issues arising from discussion of the texts.

Jacques Maritain Center History of Philosophy / by William Turner CHAPTER LVIII BRITISH MORALISTS The group of distinguished moralists who flourished in Great Britain during the eighteenth century may be said to represent the ethical phase of the empirical movement of that age. In determining moral values, mediaeval ethics had subordinated worldly interests to the interests of the future life. Hobbes, by his doctrine of state absolutism, had subjugated the moral to the political aspect of human conduct. Locke, however, admitted self-interest and the good of the many as moral determinants, and thus enabled his contemporaries and successors to develop a system of morality which should be independent of religion as well as of state authority , and should rest ultimately on the ego. Towards the end of the seventeenth century, Ralph Cudworth (1617-1688), in his Treatise concerning Eternal and Immutable Morality , expounded a system of morals which, although rational rather than empirical, prepared the way for the advocates of independent morality who appeared in the following century. He taught that moral principles and ethical ideals come neither from the will of God, nor from political authority, nor from experience, but from the ideas which necessarily exist in the mind of God and are universally and immutably present in the human mind. He agreed with the schoolmen in maintaining the universality and immutability of the natural law, but differed from them in teaching that it is absolutely

For his brother and heir, created Lord Ormonde of Lla’nthony at the coronation of George IV., the Irish marquessate was revived in 1825 and descended in the direct line. BUTLER, ALBAN (1710—1773), English Roman Catholic priest and hagiologist, was born in Northampton on the 24th of October 1710. He was educated at the English college, Douai, where on his ordination to the priesthood he held successively the chairs of philosophy and divinity. He laboured for some time as a missionary priest in Staffordshire, held several positions as tutor to young Roman Catholic noblemen, and was finally appointed president of the English seminary at St Omer, where he remained till his death on the 15th of May 1773. Butler’s great work, The Lives of the Saints, the result of thirty years’ study (4 vols., London, 1756—1759), has passed through many editions and translations (best edition, including valuable notes, Dublin, 12 vols. 1779—1780). It is a popular and compendious reproduction of the Acta Sanctorum, exhibiting great industry and research, and is in all respects the best work of its kind in English literature.
