    Butler, Samuel (1835-1902) Englischer Schriftsteller, geboren in Langar-cum-Barnstone (Nottinghamshire), gestorben in London. Butler begann zunächst ein Studium der Theologie, wanderte dann jedoch nach Neuseeland aus, wo er ab 1860 als Schafzüchter arbeitete. 1864 kehrte er nach England zurück.
    Mit der satirischen Utopie "Erewhon" "Ergindwon oder Jenseits der Berge" ) und dessen Fortsetzung "Erewhon revisited" (1901) schuf Butler eine bissige Satire auf die Sitten und Gebräuche im viktorianischen England. Sein bedeutendstes Werk ist der Roman "The Way of All Flesh" "Der Weg allen Fleisches" ), der 1903 posthum veröffentlicht wurde. In Form eines fiktiven Augenzeugenberichts schilderte Butler in dem teilweise autobiographischen Roman die Probleme und Spannungen viktorianischen Familienlebens. There are in fact two notable Samuel Butlers, both of them English authors, both satirists The first Samuel Butler ( ) was born in or near the town of Upton upon Severn in Worcestershire : he is remembered now for a satirical poem on Puritanism entitled " Hudibras ".     Butler, Samuel (1835-1902) (Langar-cum-Barnstone, Nottinghamshire 1835 - Londra 1902), romanziere britannico, conosciuto soprattutto per le sue opere satiriche. Nel 1865 scrisse una difesa derisoria dei miracoli, la cui ironia sottile sfuggì a molti lettori; in Erewhon (1872), la storia di una terra immaginaria (Erewhon è l'anagramma di nowhere , inglese per "nessun luogo"), criticò le tradizioni e i costumi della Gran Bretagna contemporanea.
