Foundations of Business Thought Samuel Butler (1835-1902) was an English novelist. He was born in Nottinghamshire, and educated at the University of Cambridge. His father was Rev. Thomas Butler and his grandfather was headmaster and bishop, Dr. Samuel Butler. Butler was raised in a religious environment that was intolerant of curiosity. In his early years, Butler traveled to Italy. He loved Italy so much that it came to be known as his "second country". While in Italy he was first introduced to the music of Handel which became a powerful influence in his life. He was also greatly influenced by the works of Homer. While Butler was at Cambridge in 1854, he fully expected to be ordained and to follow in his father's footsteps. However, he began to have doubts about the ministry. After he finished school at Cambridge and instead of being ordained, Butler immigrated to New Zealand where he was a successful sheep rancher from 1860 to 1864. He describes his life in New Zealand as one of working "like a common servant" in semi-solitude. He considered New Zealand the place that gave him a strong, robust sense of values. Butler supplemented his living by occasionally publishing some of his writing. During this time, Butler read Darwin's The Origin of Species . It appealed to Butler profoundly. In 1864, Butler returned to England where he lived for thirty-eight years until his death. During his time in England he began his life as a painter. As a painter he had considerable success. However, he soon began to write again. Butler is best known for his satirical works. In

Elinor Shafer Erewhons of the Eye:
Samuel Butler (1835-1902) has long been recognized as a great novelist, author of Erewhon and The Way of All Flesh . This groundbreaking book reveals in addition a pioneer of photography and art criticism. With 176 superb illustrations including 20 in full color and 80 rare photographs never before published Erewhons of the Eye demonstrates how Butler made a substantial contribution to both the practice and the criticism of the visual arts. As Elinor Shaffer writes, “One of the most compelling interests of Butler's life in art is the sense it conveys of how tortuous and unexpected the route may be to the styles of the next generation. ... The primitive and the naive, children's painting, ‘art brut,’ the fantastic map, the cartoon and the caricature, ironization of styles, verist sculpture, the photograph, and the literary text linked to the visual illustration in such a way as to lift and lighten the authority of the text alone all these were explored, promoted, collected or practiced by Butler.” 334 pages, 6¼x9¼"

Samuel Butler (1835-1902)
"To state this doctrine [Weismann's selectionism] is to arouse instinctive loathing; it is my fortunate task to maintain that such a nightmare of waste and death is as baseless as it is repulsive." (1890) British novelist and scientific popularizer. At first he was a convert to Darwinism, but by 1879 he had come to disbelieve the theory after reading Mivart 's Genesis of Species . This led to a petty and bitter falling out with Darwin in which Butler accused Darwin of intentionally presenting without explanation a revised version of the German Ernst Krause's biography of Erasmus Darwin that featured a vociferous attack on Butler (Darwin had combined a translation with his own lengthy essay on Erasmus). On the advice of friends such as Huxley , Darwin refused to respond to Butler's attacks, and Butler was essentially ostracized by the scientific community. Ironically, Butler's grandfather (also named Samuel Butler) had been the headmaster of Darwin's grammar school. He became Britain's most vociferous advocate of neo-Lamarckism, stressing the analogy between memory and heredity. Career:

    Samuel Butler
English novelist, essayist and critic, 1835-1902
Life is like music; it must be composed by ear, feeling, and instinct, not by rule. You can do very little with faith, but you can do nothing without it. Life is like music, it must be composed by ear, feeling and instinct, not by rule. Nevertheless one had better know the rules, for they sometimes guide in doubtful cases, though not often. Genius is a nuisance, and it is the duty of schools and colleges to abate it by setting genius-traps in its way. Happiness and misery depend not on how high up or low down you arethey depend not upond these, but on the direction in which you are tending. I really do not see much use in exalting the humble and meek; they do not remain humble and meek long when they are exalted. If God wants us to do a thing, he should make his wishes sufficiently clear. Sensible people will wait till he has done this before paying much attention to him. If people would dare to speak to one another unreservedly, there would be a good deal less sorrow in the world a hundred years hence.

Samuel Butler (1835-1902) is vooral bekend vanwege zijn autobiografische roman The Way of All Flesh, een klassieker in de Engelse literatuur. Butlers belangstelling was echter veel breder.
The Way of All Flesh. Uitvoering:
