MMSL THIOSALT BIBLIOGRAPHY Thiosalts are inevitably generated as a by-product from processing sulphidic ores. Eventually, thiosalts contaminated effluent from the treatment ponds is discharged to the environment. Ideally, thiosalts should be degraded in the effluent treatment ponds and the sulphuric acid that is generated from the oxidation of thiosalts to sulphate can be neutralized with lime before the effluent is discharged. In reality, the breakdown of thiosalts in the treatment ponds is sufficiently slow that some of the thiosalt end up in the receiving waters. Subsequent oxidation in the river or lake by autotrophic Thiobacillus bacteria is rapid. The considerable quantity of acid that is produced could bring about acidification of aquatic environments, which might effect fish and other aquatic organisms.
