Roll of Honour With the millions of casualties of the 'Great War' 1914-1918, the island of Jersey lost 862 men. The States of Jersey produced a Roll of all names and military details of the dead. An alphabetical list of those names is reproduced below, a touching record of Death's Toll of the Island's manhood and it is representative of nearly every Jersey patronymic. The Bailiff of Jersey, William Venables Vernon in November 1919, said of the Roll, "Let others that come after see to it that their names be not forgotten." This list is not necessarily exhaustive. A contemporary paper (1917) carried this report;
"" On the 10th April the States of Jersey appointed a Special Committee of their
body to compile a Roll of Honour of Jerseymen, who had given their lives for their
country, as also a Roll of those who had served in His Majesty's Forces, in the Great
War. The task imposed on the Committee was a difficult one, for Jerseymen were
serving on every front, and in every part of the world, in the Navy, in the Army and
in the Mercantile Marine; but with the ready assistance of the local Recruiting

The Class of 1931 held its 67th mini-reunion on Friday, May 22, with a social hour and luncheon in the Sharpe Refectory. Thanks to Eleanor McAndrews Retallick for making arrangements for the luncheon and sending out the notices. We had a short meeting after the luncheon and reaffirmed the resolution to appoint a nominating committee to present a slate of officers for the next three years. On Monday the class was represented by Howard Angell and Bernie Buonanno for the walk down the hill for the Commencement procession. At noon we had a table of seven at the brunch sponsored by the Alumni Association. Attending the reunion were Howard Angell, Josephine and Bernie Buonanno, Freeda and J oseph Galkin , Doris and Ben Greenfield , Dorothy and Bill Hindley , Warren and Marion Boettiger Leonard , and Eleanor Retallick and her guest, George Williams. - Bill Hindley
Elinor Martin , class secretary, reports that Dorothy Budlong has moved to 75 East St., Providence 02903; (401) 331-8474. Dorothy is class president and was largely responsible for organizing last year's 65th reunion.

  • SECOND ANNUAL DINNER OF THE NEW YORK UNION
A paragraph in the Graduate Magazine of last May spoke of the coming dinner of the New York Union of the University of Kansas. The meeting was on the sixteenth of June, at a small dining place down town. Our weather took a sea-turn, and a pouring rain came with the night. Nevertheless thirty-one were present. Among the number were Professor and Mrs. Carruth and Miss Constance straight from the University, and Professor Blake after a larger absence.
We met for good-fellowship at half past six, but plates were not served till near nine. Thereupon we rose and sang with hearty spontaneity "The Alumni Song" written by our member

Weird Tales and Astounding Science Fiction . Many authors of this period wrote first for these magazines and their stories were later collected and made more widely known in book form in the 50s to 70s. Also a number of the Golden Age authors have had very long and prolific writing lives, and also began writing collaborative works in the twilight of their careers. The authors in this section were born between 1907 and 1924 inclusive. We may say that they were the generation that experienced the Second World War. In fact the first two on our list, Robert Heinlein and L. Sprague De Camp spent most of the war in the US Naval Air Experimental Station alongside a younger companion by name of Isaac Asimov. The Fiction of Isaac Asimov
Part I: The Early Asimov (1938-1952)
This is a list of Isaac Asimov's fiction. The items in this first part of the list (1938-1952) are listed according to completion date. In Part II ( www.cs.colorado.edu/~main/asimov2.html ), the items are listed by publication date since Asimov's autobiographies don't usually have exact completion dates for the later work. My intention is to eventually illustrate the list, similar to my illustrated Heinlein list . But at the moment, I'm having too much fun re-reading the works to spend much time on illustratons. I have plans for pages of other Authors from the Golden Age of SF Sources
The completion dates and original publication information come mostly from Asimov's three autobiographies ( In Memory Yet Green In Joy Still Felt , and I. Asimov . There is also information on the first sixty stories in The Early Asimov . I have also used Edward Seiler's compilation of Asimov's fiction , William G. Contento's Index to Science Fiction , the Locus Index , the Internet Speculative Fiction Database , and the sfsite Asimov bibliographical summary . Corrections and additions are always welcome. Timeline for the Robots and Foundation Universe

    INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION: A DOCUMENTARY HISTORY
Series Three: The Papers of James Watt and his Family
formerly held at Doldowlod House, now at Birmingham Central Library
20 reels of 35mm silver-halide positive microfilm In Series Three of this microfilm project, Industrial Revolution: A Documentary History There is excellent correspondence with the following: - Aimé Argand (Swiss physician and scientist) writes about Argand lamps made at Soho, water companies in Paris, visits to French country houses and to see Ministers as well as about James Watt junior's foreign tour.
    - Sir Joseph Banks (scientist and President of the Royal Society, 1778-1820). Letters cover many different subjects including lamp glass, gunpowder, the medical use of gases, shrievalty and coinage.
Dr Thomas Beddoes (physician and founder of the Pneumatic Institute at Clifton in Bristol). Dr Beddoes and Erasmus Darwin write about the medical uses of gases (a particularly full series of letters revealing much about the practical implementation of Beddoes' ideas).
    - Claude-Louis Berthollet (French chemist) sends telling eye-witness accounts of French work on the theory of dyeing and bleaching, the problems of establishing the new chemical nomenclature of the 1780s, and the difficulties of life during the French Revolution.
